Chris Rock reflects on the Oscars slap and a possible return to hosting Chris Rock/Facebook

Chris Rock has offered a surprisingly measured reflection on the infamous Will Smith Oscars slap, admitting that he wishes the incident had never happened while suggesting that his own experience is no longer something he considers particularly important.

More than four years after Smith struck Rock on stage during the 2022 Academy Awards, the comedian and filmmaker was asked about the moment during an interview with Variety. Rock was speaking primarily about his new film, Misty Green, which he wrote and directed, but the conversation inevitably returned to the incident that dominated headlines around the world.

Rather than revisiting the confrontation in detail, Rock appeared keen to put it into perspective.

Chris Rock Wishes the Oscars Slap Never Happened

When asked how he feels about the 2022 Oscars incident now, Rock gave a straightforward response.

'Hey, man. You know, to answer your question a little bit, I wish nothing would have happened,' he told Variety.

Rock then made clear that he did not want the discussion about the slap to overshadow the film he was currently promoting, particularly the performance of actress Rosalind Eleazar in Misty Green.

'I don't want to say anything that takes any attention away from Rosalind and how good she is in this movie,' he said.

He also placed the incident against the backdrop of wider problems in the world, saying: 'Me having a bad day is not that important.'

The comments represent a notably restrained response from Rock, who previously addressed the Oscars controversy at length in his 2023 Netflix comedy special Selective Outrage.

What Happened Between Chris Rock and Will Smith?

The incident occurred during the 94th Academy Awards on 27 March 2022, when Rock was presenting the Best Documentary Feature award.

Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head, comparing her appearance to Demi Moore's character in the 1997 film G.I. Jane. Pinkett Smith has spoken publicly about her experience with alopecia, an autoimmune condition that can cause hair loss.

Will Smith initially appeared to laugh at the joke before walking onto the stage and striking Rock. He then returned to his seat and shouted at Rock during the live broadcast.

The moment became one of the most widely discussed incidents in Oscars history.

Smith later apologised publicly for his behaviour. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also announced that Smith would be banned from attending Academy events for 10 years.

Despite the enormous attention the incident received, Rock's latest comments suggest he does not want it to define the way his career or life is viewed.

Chris Rock Hints His Oscars Hosting Days May Be Over

Rock also addressed whether he could return to the Academy Awards as a host.

The comedian has hosted the Oscars twice, first in 2005 and again in 2016. However, he suggested that he may no longer be interested in taking on the high-profile hosting role.

Asked whether he had been approached about hosting again, Rock praised other comedians who have taken on major awards-show duties.

'They have great hosts. Conan O'Brien is amazing. Nikki Glaser is amazing on the Golden Globes,' he said.

Rock then added: 'I'm not going to say never, but my time might have passed, honestly.'

His wording leaves the possibility of another hosting appearance open, but it also makes clear that he does not expect to return to the role anytime soon.

Rock Has One Condition for Returning to the Oscars

Although Rock sounded uncertain about hosting again, he was more direct when asked whether he would attend the Oscars.

His answer was simple: he would return if he were nominated for an award.

'I'm not getting nominated. The only way I'll go back is if I'm nominated, and I'm not getting nominated,' Rock said.

He added that he was comfortable with that possibility, joking that everyone should 'manage expectations'.

The comment came while Rock was promoting Misty Green, his latest feature as a writer and director. The film stars Rosalind Eleazar and marks his return to directing following Top Five, which was released in 2014.

Rock's comments also reflect his reluctance to make himself the centre of attention while promoting the film. Instead, he repeatedly directed attention towards Eleazar and the work itself.

'Misty Green' Marks a New Chapter for Chris Rock

The timing of Rock's comments is significant because Misty Green represents another stage in his filmmaking career.

The film follows an actress dealing with the decline of her career and personal struggles. Rock not only directed the project but also wrote it and appears in the film.

During his Variety interview, Rock reflected more broadly on his career and expressed gratitude for the opportunities he has received in entertainment.

His comments about the Oscars therefore appear less focused on settling old scores and more reflective of where he is in his career now.

Four years after the slap became one of the defining moments of the 2022 Academy Awards, Rock appears increasingly uninterested in allowing the incident to overshadow everything else he has done.

For now, his position on returning to Hollywood's biggest awards ceremony is clear: hosting again may no longer be a priority, while attending would only make sense to him if he were there as a nominee.

And when it comes to the slap itself, Chris Rock's message is equally straightforward. He wishes it had never happened, but he does not see one bad night as the most important part of his story.
