Anna Wintour is facing renewed scrutiny following the Metropolitan Museum of Art's decision to abandon its planned 2027 exhibition dedicated to John Galliano, bringing a major new twist to the controversy surrounding the designer's fashion legacy.

The Met and Galliano announced on Monday, 31 August, that John Galliano: Horizons, scheduled as the Costume Institute's spring 2027 exhibition, would not proceed as planned. The decision came just weeks after the museum unveiled the exhibition and amid growing criticism of its decision to honour Galliano despite his history of antisemitic and racist remarks.

The controversy also intensified because the planned 2027 Met Gala was scheduled for 3 May 2027, with the date falling on the eve of Yom HaShoah, the Jewish day of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust. Reports had indicated that the timing was being reconsidered amid concerns surrounding the Galliano tribute.

Why Anna Wintour Is Facing Criticism

Wintour, the global editorial director of Vogue and a trustee of the Met, has long supported Galliano's work. Her continued belief in his creative influence has become a focus of criticism following the decision to dedicate a major Costume Institute exhibition to his career.

In a statement following the cancellation, Wintour described Galliano's decision to ask the museum to postpone the exhibition as 'very courageous' and said she believed it was the right decision. She also expressed her full support for both Galliano and the Met.

Wintour's comments have attracted renewed attention because of her prominent role in the Met Gala and her involvement with the Costume Institute. The controversy has raised broader questions about how major cultural institutions should approach the work of artists and designers whose creative achievements are accompanied by serious personal controversies.

However, the Met has not accused Wintour of independently deciding to stage the Galliano exhibition. The museum said the cancellation followed discussions involving Galliano and multiple stakeholders.

What Happened to the Galliano Exhibition?

The planned exhibition, John Galliano: Horizons, was announced in July and was intended to examine four decades of Galliano's career, including his work at Givenchy and Christian Dior and his later period at Maison Margiela.

The exhibition would have been only the third major Costume Institute retrospective devoted to a living designer, following exhibitions dedicated to Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons in 2017.

But the announcement quickly generated criticism because of Galliano's past.

In 2011, Galliano was dismissed from Christian Dior after footage emerged of him making antisemitic remarks at a Paris bar. He was subsequently convicted by a French court over public insults based on religion, race and ethnicity. Galliano later apologised for his behaviour and returned to the fashion industry, eventually becoming creative director of Maison Margiela.

In his statement about the cancelled exhibition, Galliano acknowledged the pain caused by his past words, specifically referring to the Jewish and Asian communities. He said he remained accountable for his actions and recognised that meaningful atonement could not be achieved through a single institutional honour or public gesture.

The Yom HaShoah Controversy

The timing of the planned Met Gala added another sensitive dimension to the debate.

The 2027 gala had been scheduled for 3 May, while Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, falls on 4 May 2027. Because the Jewish observance begins the previous evening, the gala's planned date would have overlapped with the beginning of the remembrance period. Reports said Met trustees and others were considering whether the gala date should be changed.

The issue became particularly sensitive because the event was originally intended to launch the Costume Institute's exhibition on Galliano, whose 2011 remarks had already made the proposed tribute controversial.

Jewish community leaders and some New York officials publicly raised concerns about the planned exhibition, while reports also described pressure from some museum donors. Those concerns added to the scrutiny facing the Met as it reconsidered the project.

Galliano Steps Away From the Project

On 31 August, Galliano said that, following discussions with the Met and others involved, he had decided that the exhibition should not take place at this time.

The Met's director and CEO, Max Hollein, confirmed the decision, saying the museum and Galliano had together decided not to proceed with the exhibition.

Galliano said he did not want the controversy surrounding him to put the museum in a difficult position or distract attention from the work of the Costume Institute.

The decision effectively ends the planned John Galliano: Horizons exhibition in its original form, although Wintour referred to the move as a postponement in her statement. The Met has not announced whether the exhibition could be reconsidered at a later date.

What Happens to the 2027 Met Gala?

Galliano's withdrawal has also left questions surrounding the 2027 Met Gala.

The Met has confirmed that information about a new spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition and the 2027 Met Gala will be announced at a later date. As a result, the previously announced Galliano theme should no longer be treated as the confirmed theme for next year's event.

The original gala date was 3 May 2027, but the museum has not yet confirmed whether that date will remain unchanged.

For Wintour, the controversy represents a significant challenge at a time when the Met Gala remains one of fashion's most influential annual events. Her role in the gala and her support for Galliano's creative legacy have placed her at the centre of wider discussions about the relationship between artistic achievement, accountability and institutional recognition.

A New Test for the Met

The cancellation of John Galliano: Horizons may have ended the immediate exhibition controversy, but it has not resolved the broader debate.

The Met must now determine how to replace an exhibition that was only announced weeks earlier while addressing concerns raised by critics, community leaders and others connected to the institution.

For Wintour, the episode also highlights the scrutiny that comes with her long-standing influence over the Met Gala and the fashion establishment.

The museum has yet to reveal what will replace Galliano's exhibition or whether the 2027 Met Gala's date and theme will change. Until those plans are announced, the fallout from the Galliano controversy is likely to remain an important test of how the Met balances fashion history, artistic recognition and institutional responsibility.
