Anthony Bourdain was never known for chasing fashion trends. Yet one simple Kenneth Cole leather jacket became one of the most recognisable parts of his look, going from a sale item of around £120 ($162) to a highly sought-after piece connected to one of his most famous TV looks. Now, more than 20 years after Bourdain first wore it on television, Kenneth Cole is working on bringing the jacket back in a new version.
The story shows how a basic piece of clothing can become much more valuable when it is tied to the right person. Bourdain did not need a rare designer coat to create a lasting fashion moment. He simply wore one jacket so often that it became part of his identity.
The Famous £120 Jacket
The jacket was made by Kenneth Cole New York and is believed to be from the brand's autumn/winter 2003 collection. Fashion researcher Nathan Capistrano estimated that the cowhide leather piece would have sold for between £180 ($243) and £300 ($405) when new, before falling to around £120 ($162) in the sale.

Bourdain wore the jacket during the early years of No Reservations, including the show's first episode in 2005. His travels took the jacket around the world, and it soon became closely linked to his relaxed and rugged style.
The exact model's name has never been fully confirmed. The autumn/winter 2003 collection remains the strongest lead, although another fashion researcher has suggested it may have come from around autumn/winter 2002.
From Everyday Jacket to Collector's Piece
Bourdain's personal jacket later became far more valuable than its original sale price. The jacket from his collection sold for just over £5,000 ($6,760) at auction in 2019. The auction included more than 200 items from Bourdain's personal collection. His belongings included clothing, books, watches, kitchen items and other pieces connected to his life and career.
The jacket's rise in value shows how celebrity history can change the meaning of clothing. A piece that once sold for around £120 ($162) became a collector's item because it was worn by a person whose style and personality remain widely remembered.
Kenneth Cole Is Bringing It Back
The biggest twist came in August 2026, when Kenneth Cole confirmed that the famous Bourdain jacket could return. Cole said the brand is working on bringing back the original jacket or a version of it, although the details are still private.
The timing also fits with a wider return to leather at Kenneth Cole. Cole said the brand plans to bring more leather pieces into its autumn range after moving towards fabrics such as wool, nylon and technical materials in recent years.
There is no confirmed release date or price for the new Bourdain jacket yet. For now, the project is still being developed, but the plan gives fans a chance to own something inspired by one of his best-known looks.
The Jacket Was Never Meant to Be a Grail
It is easy to look at the jacket today and wonder what made it so special. The answer may be that nothing about it was trying too hard to stand out. Bourdain wore it while travelling, eating, working and appearing on television. Over time, the leather collected signs of his life, giving the jacket a story that a brand-new piece could never have from the start.
That is also why finding another matching jacket has become difficult. Researchers have reported seeing very few examples of the same version online, while similar pieces from Kenneth Cole's cheaper Reaction line are easier to find.
New Life for Bourdain's Signature Jacket
More than two decades after its first TV appearance, the Kenneth Cole leather jacket has taken on a life of its own. It started as a mid-range leather piece, became part of Bourdain's signature style, reached more than £5,000 ($6,760) at auction and is now being considered for a new release.
Bourdain never appeared to dress simply for fashion. His clothes worked because they matched his personality, and the leather jacket became one of the clearest examples of that approach.
If Kenneth Cole brings the jacket back, shoppers will not just be buying another leather coat. They will be buying a piece inspired by Anthony Bourdain's lasting style, proving that sometimes the clothes people remember most are the ones worn without trying too hard to be remembered.
