One of fashion's most unlikely pairings will finally hit the shelves. Birkenstock's Arizona, the sandal your podiatrist recommends while your inner fashion critic silently disapproves, has been mocked for decades as one of the ugliest options in any wardrobe. The Parisian ballet flat, all delicate straps and effortless style, has always sat at the opposite end of the spectrum, offering little to no arch support. The choice has always been the same: comfort while sacrificing style, or style and deal with the consequences by 4 PM.
That truce arrives on 16 July, when Birkenstock's collaboration with French ballet institution Repetto launches through 1774.com, Repetto's own boutiques and select retailers worldwide. Charlotte Gaucher-Holmann, Repetto's chief executive, has described the approach as treating Birkenstock's silhouettes as a blank canvas, adding that dancers already slip into Birkenstocks after rehearsals, making the partnership feel less like a stunt and more like an obvious next step.
It arrives at a time when 'ugly chic' feels more mainstream than ever, from Crocs collaborations to Miu Miu's ballet flats, and this collection may further enhance Birkenstock's reputation down that same path.
The Shoe That Started It All
The Arizona has long been dismissed as an airport shoe rather than a red-carpet one. This version swaps the traditional plastic clasps for oversized, sculptural buckles that feel more jewellery than hardware, while a Vichy-check gingham lining sits hidden inside the footbed, a signature Repetto motif that only reveals itself once worn. Dressed in soft ballerina pink with those jewel-like fastenings, the Arizona no longer feels like a shoe one apologises for wearing.
The main question that sandal purists will likely ask is whether the sandals' comfort has endured the makeover. Birkenstock has not confirmed if the contoured cork footbed remains unchanged beneath the new lining, which may matter more to some shoppers than the addition of ribbons.
Beyond the Arizona: The Clog and the Hybrid
The collection extends the same treatment to two further styles. The Scala is an entirely new silhouette, sitting somewhere between a sandal and a ballet flat, with a rounded toe and a laced bow at the front. The Opéra, a clog wrapped in long laces that coil slowly around the ankle, mimics the exact motion of a dancer tying her pointe shoes before curtain up.
Both styles are striking, but neither carries the symbolic weight of the Arizona, since it is the Arizona that had a reputation to lose. Across the collection, pricing has reportedly been set at $350 for the Arizona, $390 for the Scala and $370 for the Opéra, though UK figures have not yet been confirmed.
The Detail That Has Fans Talking
Across TikTok and Instagram previews, the comments confirm the shift taking place. One self-confessed sceptic admitted they don't like Birkenstocks but want this Repetto collaboration, which rather sums up the shift taking place. A dedicated Repetto collector went further, declaring she already owns so many Repettos yet still needs these, while another simply exclaimed they were obsessed with the new designs.

The Birkenstock Repetto collaboration has done what years of orthopaedic innovation alone never quite managed. It has made the Arizona desirable, ugly reputation and all, and it has done so before a single pair has reached the shelves.
