Céline Dion cried within moments of walking on stage. She told the crowd she wouldn't, then did anyway. On Saturday, 12 September, the 58-year-old opened her 26-date Paris concert series at Plénitude Arena in Nanterre. Around 30,000 people watched her play a full show for the first time in nearly six years.

She revealed her stiff-person syndrome diagnosis in 2022, after the condition had already forced her off the road. Before Saturday, the closest fans had come to seeing her perform was that Eiffel Tower moment at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

This show was different. Dion sang a career-spanning set in French and English, brought back songs she hadn't performed live in years, and changed into a succession of striking couture looks.

Céline Dion Paris Opening Night Setlist

Dion opened with 'On ne change pas' before moving through 'Destin', 'Because You Loved Me' and 'The Power of Love'.

She dusted off 'Ne bouge pas', reportedly performed in full for the first time since 2003, and 'Les derniers seront les premiers', unheard live since 2009. 'The Chase', 'Dansons' and 'Je chanterai' also featured.

'My Heart Will Go On' and 'It's All Coming Back to Me Now' were among the night's biggest moments, and an operatic turn on 'Ebben? Ne andrò lontana' stood out before the encore closed with 'All by Myself', 'Pour que tu m'aimes encore' and 'S'il suffisait d'aimer'.

Every Look Céline Dion Wore at Her Paris Comeback Concert

The wardrobe told its own story. Dion opened in a custom black Dior gown by Jonathan Anderson, made from pleated and gathered black fabric with a fitted bodice and cinched waist, its skirt nodding to the house's 1950s 'Francis Poulenc' silhouette.

She later wore a custom Schiaparelli ensemble by creative director Daniel Roseberry, based on an archival evening jacket from the late 1930s and its reinterpretation in the house's Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2025 collection, plus a sculpting bustier look from Alaïa. The most theatrical change was a custom dusty pink Givenchy cape by Sarah Burton, worn over a cut-out dress.

Was this simply a superstar being dressed by the world's biggest fashion houses for one big night, or was there something more deliberate going on, a wardrobe that seemed to echo the resilience behind a long-awaited comeback?

What Céline Dion's Illness Battle Means for This Comeback

Stiff-person syndrome is a rare neurological condition that causes painful, unpredictable muscle spasms, and it kept Dion off stage for years. The sculpted, structured lines of the Schiaparelli and Alaïa pieces can be read as a nod to the resilience she has spoken about since returning to public life, including in her 2024 documentary, I Am: Céline Dion.

Dion or her team has not confirmed that reading, so it remains an interpretation rather than a stated intention.

Dion's own words carried plenty of weight. 'I had promised myself not to cry,' she told the crowd. 'But I'm so happy to see you all. I missed you.' French media reported fans gathering outside her Paris hotel in the days beforehand, hoping for a glimpse of her ahead of opening night.

Saturday was the first of 26 shows. Sixteen performances run from 12 September to 17 October 2026, with ten more scheduled for 8 to 29 May 2027. For Dion, opening night set the terms of the return: a career-spanning performance, a visibly emotional reunion with her audience, and couture built for a major Paris stage.
