It has been six years after the tragic death of beloved Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman. A major legal dispute has erupted within his close-knit family. The late star's brothers, Kevin Boseman and Derrick Boseman, have filed official court documents asking a Los Angeles judge to completely remove his widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, as the legal administrator of his estate.
Chadwick Boseman passed away in August 2020 at the age of 43 following a private four-year battle with colon cancer. The famous actor died without leaving a final will. His financial affairs entered a very complicated legal probate process. In 2022, a California court issued a final order stating that his estate assets should be split between his widow and his grieving parents, Leroy Boseman and Carolyn Boseman.
A Denial of Closure
However, the new lawsuit alleges that this court-ordered division has not happened. According to the fresh legal petition, Kevin and Derrick claim that Taylor continues to exercise complete and unilateral control over the estate. The brothers alleged that Taylor acted without consulting or involving Chadwick's elderly parents.
The brothers argued that this behaviour denies the family long-overdue closure. They were also denied active participation in decisions affecting their rightful financial interests.
They point out that Taylor has cut off communication with them over the past few years. According to the brothers, they are left in the dark over these important financial matters.
The court filing highlights several major financial issues that need immediate judicial attention and thorough review. The family claimed that a $40,000 long-term care policy meant for Chadwick's mother, Carolyn, has still not been handed over.
Missing Residual Payments
The brothers state that many residual payments from SAG-AFTRA, covering the period from 2020 right up to the present day, remain unaccounted for and unmanaged.
The petition also points to other hidden or unmanaged assets that were undisclosed.
These include valuable image and intellectual property rights, real property, an undisclosed bank fund, and various personal belongings.
The family's legal team argues that this ongoing lack of transparency creates the appearance that assets are being deliberately concealed from both the relatives and the court.
Left in the Dark
The lawsuit accuses Taylor of deliberately blocking business opportunities that could have benefited Chadwick's elderly parents. The brothers allege that she is currently the only person profiting from the late actor's global fame and likeness. Kevin and Derrick want the court to hold Taylor in contempt for allegedly ignoring previous instructions.
The family is asking the judge to appoint a private professional fiduciary and forensic accountant named Jason Rubin to take over the administration of the estate. They also want Taylor to provide a complete account of all financial records within a short timeframe. The brothers are also asking that their brother's widow be barred from signing major contracts involving Chadwick's name without family approval.
This developing legal battle highlights the common difficulties that occur when high-profile stars die without clear estate planning. As the court prepares to review the new petition during upcoming hearings, Taylor Simone Ledward has not yet made a public statement or formal reply to the serious claims made by her late husband's family.
