Dylan Sprouse has opened up about his experience as a child actor, comparing the demands of working in Hollywood from a young age to child labour, including children who once worked in coal mines. The former Disney Channel star reflected on growing up in the entertainment industry and the pressure that came with working from such a young age.

While Sprouse was speaking about the emotional toll of child stardom, his choice of comparison did not land well with everyone. Some critics branded the actor 'out of touch' while others defended his broader point about children losing a normal childhood when they enter the industry.

Comparing Child Actors to Miners

Sprouse made the comments during the recent episode of the Wildmen podcast, which he hosts with Brendan Columbus. Reflecting on his childhood career, the 34-year-old said: 'Some kids used to work in coal mines and guard the mine cart door when they were 15, we just sang and danced. It's still child labor.'

He went on to describe television work as essentially a full-time office job. According to Sprouse, child actors go to work, clock in and out and spend long hours on set, even if the environment is obviously very different from a conventional workplace.

But the bigger issue for him was what happened when the cameras stopped rolling.

Sprouse said finishing a production could leave him with a 'void' because his self-esteem had become closely linked to working and being on set. He admitted that he is still dealing with some of the mental hurdles created during that period.

The conversation also featured former Ugly Betty star Mark Indelicato, who also entered the entertainment industry as a child. Indelicato agreed that growing up as a child actor creates an unusual shared experience that can be difficult for people outside the industry to understand.

The Internet Pushes Back

Some social media users felt the coal-mine comparison was simply too much, questioning whether Sprouse understood what child labour means. Others pointed to the money and fame that came with his childhood career, arguing that his experience was hardly comparable with children forced into dangerous work.

One sarcastic reaction essentially suggested: 'His 'child labour' has him living the sweet life now so he doesn't have to work a normal job like most of us peasants.'

Still, there were people who agreed with him. One supporter wrote: 'I've been saying this forever. If it was any other job the kids couldn't do it. It's taking away their childhood. Use AI for kids and let them have lives.'

Journey to Stardom

Sprouse and his twin brother Cole began acting when they were babies. The brothers appeared in projects including Grace Under Fire and Big Daddy before landing their breakthrough Disney Channel roles.

In 2005, they became household names as Zack and Cody Martin in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. They later reprised the characters in The Suite Life on Deck, which ran until 2011.

The twins eventually stepped away from Hollywood to attend university, with Dylan graduating from New York University in 2015.

What Is Dylan Sprouse Doing Now?

Dylan eventually returned to acting and has appeared in films including After We Collided and Beautiful Disaster. He has also explored business ventures and launched Wildmen with Brendan Columbus, giving him a platform to discuss everything from Hollywood to his own experiences.

His personal life is changing, too. Sprouse married model Barbara Palvin in 2023, and the couple announced in May 2026 that they were expecting their first child. They later revealed they are having a baby girl.
