Emma D'Arcy has given the classic suit a distinctly surreal makeover, stepping out in a sculptural Jil Sander blazer that appeared to defy gravity during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. With its dramatic, windblown shape, the jacket transformed otherwise traditional tailoring into one of the actor's most eye-catching fashion moments.
The actor wore the striking ensemble while promoting their latest film, Digger, with stylist Rose Forde selecting the look from Jil Sander's spring 2027 collection by Simone Bellotti. The unusual blazer was paired with an untucked ecru button-up shirt and straight-legged navy trousers, creating a deliberately restrained base for one very unconventional piece.
The Blazer That Looks Caught in the Wind
The first thing that stands out is the blazer itself. Its sculptural shape gives the impression that the jacket has been caught in a sudden gust of wind, making it appear almost detached from the conventional rules of tailoring.
Rather than relying on sequins, dramatic colour or extravagant accessories, the look gets its impact from the construction and silhouette of the jacket. The ecru shirt and navy trousers are comparatively understated, leaving the unusual blazer to do all the talking.
It is a particularly effective styling choice because the rest of the outfit remains recognisable as traditional suiting. The jacket is what disrupts that familiarity, transforming an otherwise classic combination into something far more unexpected.
That tension between precision and imperfection is central to Bellotti's work at Jil Sander. For his spring 2027 collection, the designer questioned whether the brand's famously rigorous approach to minimalism was enough in an era when minimalism itself has become mainstream.
Simone Bellotti's Deliberate Distortion
The unusual construction also fits into a wider design language Bellotti has been developing since taking over at Jil Sander. His tailoring is precise, but he has increasingly introduced subtle disruptions to conventional silhouettes. In his autumn 2026 collection, for example, Bellotti described suits in which details appeared slightly 'wrong', with collars falling away from the body and shoulders appearing detached.
A news media outlet noted that some garments looked as though they wanted to 'run away' from the body. That makes D'Arcy's latest look more than an eccentric celebrity fashion choice. The strange-looking blazer is part of a deliberate design philosophy: take something familiar, such as a tailored jacket, and alter its proportions or structure enough to make the wearer — and the viewer — look twice.
Vogue's Nicole Phelps similarly highlighted the tension in Bellotti's work, describing the collection as applying rigorous technique to something deliberately 'off'.
Emma D'Arcy Keeps Choosing Unconventional Tailoring
The Jil Sander appearance also follows a pattern in D'Arcy's recent fashion choices.
At the 2026 Emmys, the actor wore a slouchy three-piece suit by Japanese designer Soshi Otsuki, featuring an oversized blazer, rounded shoulders, flowing trousers and an undone salmon shirt beneath a button-heavy waistcoat. The appearance marked Otsuki's American red-carpet debut, following his 2025 LVMH Prize win.
The difference between that look and the Jil Sander ensemble is striking, but the philosophy is similar. D'Arcy is not simply using tailoring as a safe red-carpet option. The silhouettes are deliberately relaxed, exaggerated or disrupted, turning the suit itself into the statement.
This time, however, the effect is considerably more surreal.
Why the Look Works
There is a clever simplicity to D'Arcy's styling. By keeping the shirt and trousers relatively straightforward, the outfit avoids competing with the blazer's unusual shape. That allows Bellotti's tailoring to remain the focus while D'Arcy's understated styling keeps the overall look from becoming costume-like. It is strange, but still recognisably a suit.
And that is perhaps the most interesting part of the look. Bellotti has taken one of fashion's most conventional garments and made it appear almost impossible without abandoning the precision associated with Jil Sander.
D'Arcy's appearance feels like a natural meeting of actor and designer: both are willing to take something familiar and make it slightly unsettling. With its windblown silhouette and carefully controlled proportions, the Jil Sander blazer does not merely make a traditional suit look different. It makes it look as though it has briefly escaped the laws of gravity.
