Hollywood actress Jennifer Garner has spoken out about the stark double standard she faced while raising her young family in Los Angeles. She revealed in the Shut Up Evan podcast how paparazzi relentlessly targeted her during daily school runs while largely ignoring her former husband, Ben Affleck.
Garner detailed how routine parenting responsibilities frequently spiralled into genuine physical danger. On a typical morning, as many as 20 cars driven by aggressive photographers would pursue her vehicle through heavy city traffic. The paparazzi were relentless and would run red lights and cut off motorists to photograph her dropping her young children off at school.
To escape the relentless siege, Garner was forced to take extraordinary measures. On one occasion, she had to hide her children in the back of a pool maintenance truck just to take them to a local park without being followed.
A Lucrative Double Standard
The film star highlighted a glaring disparity in how male and female celebrities are treated by the press. While famous male stars living on her street, including Affleck, were mostly left in peace, Garner was constantly hunted. Tabloid media specifically incentivised photographers to target famous mothers, placing a premium on images of domestic life and everyday errands.
This non-stop pursuit took a heavy emotional toll on her three children: Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel. The children were forced to quit their local sports teams after crowds of photographers turned their weekend matches into chaotic and unsafe spectacles. Garner shared that that the paparazzi activity made it unsafe for her children's schoolmates as well.
Garner recalled heartbreaking moments at home. She shared that her eldest daughter would ask why law enforcement could not step in to protect them from photographers who blocked their driveway. The family also had to shout at them whenever they tried to leave.
For years, their privacy was entirely out of reach. It took a global pandemic and mandatory face masks for her children to experience basic public life. She recalled that it was only then were that they able to visit a public beach together for the very first time without being chased away.
She shared that these were one of the rare moments when her children enjoyed being able to spend some quiet time with family without fear of the paparazzi.

From Personal Trauma to Political Reform
Refusing to let the harassment remain her family's permanent reality, Garner transformed her personal ordeal into political action. She joined forces with fellow actress Halle Berry in 2013 to travel to Sacramento to deliver emotional testimony before the California State Legislature.
Their high-profile campaign proved decisive and directly led to the passage of Assembly Bill 605. The landmark legislation introduced tougher criminal penalties for paparazzi who intentionally harass, stalk, or terrorise the children of high-profile parents due to their family's celebrity status.
