John Galliano has withdrawn from a planned Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition celebrating his career after renewed backlash over antisemitic and racist remarks that derailed his career at Dior more than 15 years ago.

The British designer had been due to become only the third living designer to receive a major Costume Institute retrospective. John Galliano: Horizons was scheduled to run from 9 May 2027 to 9 January 2028, with the exhibition set to form the focus of the 2027 Met Gala.

Galliano Withdraws From Met Exhibition

Galliano announced on 31 August that he had decided, after discussions with the Met and those involved, that the exhibition should not proceed. In his statement, Galliano said he remained 'fully accountable' for the pain caused by his past words, particularly the hurt caused to Jewish and Asian communities.

He also said meaningful atonement could not be achieved through an exhibition, institutional recognition or a single public gesture. Galliano said he did not want the debate surrounding him to put the Met in a difficult position or distract from the Costume Institute's work.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art confirmed that it had jointly decided with Galliano not to proceed with the exhibition. Max Hollein, the museum's director and chief executive, said the decision followed 'thoughtful discussions' with the designer.

Vogue global editorial director Dame Anna Wintour supported the decision and praised Galliano's choice, while continuing to recognise his influence and technical contribution to fashion.

Why the Exhibition Faced Backlash

The controversy centred on Galliano's conduct in Paris in 2011, when he was filmed making antisemitic remarks in a bar. The footage included the now-infamous declaration, 'I love Hitler', alongside other offensive comments directed at Jewish people. Galliano later told a French court that the remarks did not represent views he genuinely held.

The proposed exhibition was designed to examine Galliano's career while also addressing his past conduct and questions around accountability. The museum had acknowledged the controversy as part of the exhibition's intended framework.

However, critics continued to object to the decision to honour Galliano with such a high-profile retrospective, particularly because the 2027 Met Gala was due to take place on 3 May, which coincides with Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day.

New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin was among those who opposed the planned exhibition. As the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, she said the issue was particularly personal.

Galliano's Dior Career Collapsed

Galliano's 2011 scandal had a devastating impact on his position at Dior, where he was creative director. After footage of his Paris outburst emerged, Dior dismissed him following the controversy over his conduct. The scandal effectively ended his tenure at one of fashion's most prestigious houses.

Galliano subsequently entered treatment for alcohol and prescription drug addiction. He later rebuilt his career, returning to the top of fashion with Maison Margiela, where he served as creative director from 2014 until 2024.

His professional comeback has continued to raise questions about accountability, rehabilitation and how his creative legacy should be viewed alongside his past behaviour.

French Court Convicted Galliano

The Paris controversy also resulted in criminal proceedings.

In September 2011, a French court found Galliano guilty of public insults based on origin, religion, race or ethnicity following two separate incidents. He received a suspended fine of €6,000 and was ordered to pay court costs.

During his trial, Galliano apologised for the distress caused by his behaviour and discussed his struggles with addiction. He also rejected the suggestion that the remarks reflected his personal beliefs.

The conviction remains an important part of the history surrounding his career and the debate over his return to fashion's most powerful institutions.

What Happens to the 2027 Met Gala?

The cancellation does not mean the 2027 Met Gala itself has been scrapped. The Metropolitan Museum of Art said a new spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition and details of the 2027 Met Gala will be announced at a later date.

The decision ends what would have been a major institutional celebration of Galliano's work. The planned retrospective was intended to trace his four-decade career, including his work at Givenchy, Dior and Maison Margiela.

Instead, the abandoned exhibition has become another chapter in the complicated story of Galliano's career, highlighting the continuing tension between his enormous influence on fashion and the lasting consequences of his documented past conduct.
