Joseph Gordon-Levitt's criticism of powerful artificial intelligence companies has resurfaced amid online discussion about his previously confirmed attendance at two conferences organised by Dialog, an invitation-only network co-founded by billionaire Peter Thiel.
The actor and filmmaker has been increasingly outspoken about AI regulation and the need for stronger safeguards, particularly when it comes to children. His comments have now attracted renewed attention online because his name appeared in leaked material connected to Dialog.
However, while Gordon-Levitt has acknowledged attending two Dialog conferences. There is no verified evidence that Gordon-Levitt's attendance at two Dialog conferences establishes a political alliance with Thiel or that Thiel directs his AI advocacy. In fact, Gordon-Levitt has explicitly said that he has never met Thiel and considers their political and ideological views fundamentally opposed.
Gordon-Levitt Warned About 'Amoral' AI Companies
Gordon-Levitt's concerns about artificial intelligence are not new. Early this year, he travelled to Utah to testify in support of House Bill 286, legislation aimed at increasing transparency around AI systems and strengthening protections for children.
Speaking before Utah lawmakers, Gordon-Levitt described AI as a powerful technology capable of both helping and harming people. He argued that stronger rules were needed to ensure that commercial interests did not overwhelm public safety.
The actor was particularly concerned about his own children growing up in a world increasingly shaped by AI.
'I'm worried about them growing up in a future that's dominated by these amoral AI businesses,' he said, arguing that some companies had failed to adequately prioritise children's wellbeing.
His appearance came as Utah lawmakers considered HB 286, which sought to require certain AI developers to publish safety and child-protection plans, disclose risks and report certain incidents. The proposal also included protections for whistleblowers.
Gordon-Levitt has also been working more broadly on issues surrounding technology, creativity and AI. His interest extends beyond the potential risks to children to questions about how AI could affect creative workers and the future of human-made media.
Why Peter Thiel's Name Entered the Conversation
The separate controversy involving Gordon-Levitt emerged in June 2026, after leaked information relating to Dialog brought renewed attention to the invitation-only organisation.
Dialog was co-founded by Peter Thiel and Auren Hoffman. Reports described it as a forum intended to bring together influential figures from technology, politics, business and other fields for private discussions. A leaked directory and other material subsequently identified numerous prominent names associated with the organisation.
Gordon-Levitt was among those named. Unlike some of the speculation circulating online, however, his involvement is not merely an allegation. Gordon-Levitt himself confirmed that he had attended two Dialog conferences.
Being listed in connection with Dialog, or attending one of its conferences, does not by itself establish that someone shares Thiel's political views or belongs to a political organisation.
Gordon-Levitt Says He Has Never Met Peter Thiel
Following the reports, Gordon-Levitt addressed the controversy directly.
He said he understood why people were suspicious but rejected the implication that attending Dialog conferences meant he was aligned with Thiel.
'I have been to two Dialog conferences,' Gordon-Levitt said in a statement shared on Instagram. 'But, I do not know Peter Thiel.' He added that he had never met Thiel, spoken with him or his representatives, or seen him at an event.
Gordon-Levitt went further, saying that based on what he had read about Thiel's views, the two were 'political and ideological opposites'. He also described the Dialog conferences he attended as gatherings involving people with a wide variety of opinions. According to Gordon-Levitt, his experience was not that of a single ideological gathering.
He said his broader approach to technology has involved engaging with people with different perspectives, explaining that sometimes it can be productive to speak with people one disagrees with.
What the Online Reaction Gets Right — and Wrong
The online reaction is understandable given the unusual nature of Dialog and the prominence of some of the people whose names appeared in leaked material.
Some social media users have questioned how Gordon-Levitt could attend conferences associated with Thiel while simultaneously criticising the direction of the technology industry. But there is an important factual distinction between attending a conference and sharing its founder's political beliefs.
Gordon-Levitt's attendance at two Dialog conferences is confirmed. His claim that he does not know Thiel and disagrees with him politically is also on the record. What cannot responsibly be claimed is that his attendance proves he is part of a secret political movement or that his criticism of AI companies is somehow directed by Thiel.
Some media reports have described Dialog as a 'secret society' or secretive organisation, reflecting the group's private, invitation-only structure. However, the label does not establish that every person who attended its conferences shares the political views of its founders.
