Academy Award-winning actress Nicole Kidman has broken her silence on her high-profile divorce from country music star Keith Urban. She admitted that she was left feeling 'very fearful and deeply vulnerable' as she adapts to single life at 59.

Speaking to British Vogue for their September cover story, the Oscar winner opened up about navigating the end of her 19-year marriage. Kidman filed for divorce in September 2025 in Nashville, citing irreconcilable differences.

The dissolution was finalised in January, with Kidman named as the primary residential parent of their two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret.

Nothing Prepares You for a Breakup

Despite having experienced a public divorce from actor Tom Cruise in 2001, Kidman dismissed the notion that past heartbreak makes any split any easier to endure. When asked if her first divorce served as a template for her second, she rejected the idea completely.

'It's all new,' Kidman remarked, throwing up her hands. 'Every time!'

Reflecting on the sudden shift in her personal life, the Babygirl star confessed that adjusting to an unwritten future has been a daunting process. 'I didn't expect this,' she admitted. 'I had a different view of what my life was going to be, but this is what it is now.'

'You make all these plans and you have all these ideas of what it's all going to be like and then it's ... not. You have to adjust. You adapt. The future, it's completely unknown to me right now.'

Kidman described her emotional mindset during the immediate fallout, noting that she was forced to choose between retreating or pushing forward despite her anxieties.

'There was a point where I was very fearful and deeply vulnerable, which is exposing,' she said. 'And then at the same time going, Well, I can either really not confront it and just curl up, or I can just go forward with an enormous amount of hope.'

'Feelings First Approach'

Attributing her resilience to female mentors—including her mother and a longtime family friend—Kidman explained that she relies on a 'feelings-first approach' to process hardship rather than over-analysing her circumstances. She recalled advice from her mentors to 'take it on the chin' when life presents unforeseen obstacles.

'Once you accept that, instead of going "Well, that's not fair or it's unjust", you go "Well, yes, actually it isn't fair. Because things are not fair",' Kidman shared.

'I know my character. I know my talent. I know who I am. If I make a mistake and it doesn't connect, or something goes wrong in my life where it's humiliating, it's OK. Other people have had that and that's OK.'

Life After Marriage

Throughout the transition, Kidman emphasised that protecting her daughters remains her primary focus.

Under the terms of their divorce settlement, both Kidman and Urban agreed to share key parenting decisions jointly without seeking spousal support.

'It's an extraordinary purpose. Everything else is not important,' Kidman concluded. 'These kids now, that's what we drop everything for. It's OK, we're here. You've got people who love you, who are going to hold your hand and get through it.'
