Olivia Wilde has spoken out about the intense backlash she faced after her romance with Harry Styles became public, saying she felt she was unfairly portrayed as a neglectful mother while men in similar situations were celebrated.

The actress and director said criticism surrounding her relationship with Styles after her split from Jason Sudeikis was particularly painful because it was often linked to her role as a parent. Appearing on Call Her Daddy, Wilde claimed she faced a level of judgement that she believes many men would not experience.

Her comments have reignited a wider debate about the pressure placed on celebrity mothers, particularly when they begin new relationships, pursue careers or step outside traditional expectations of motherhood.

Harry Styles' Romance Became a Global Media Obsession

Wilde's relationship with Styles became one of Hollywood's most discussed romances after the pair met while working on Don't Worry Darling, which Wilde directed and Styles starred in.

The pair's relationship attracted worldwide attention not only because of Styles' global fame but also because of the 10-year age gap between them and the timing of their romance following Wilde's separation from Sudeikis in 2020.

Although Wilde and Styles kept much of their relationship private, their public appearances quickly became a focus for intense media coverage, with many conversations moving beyond their romance and into commentary about Wilde's choices as a mother.

Olivia Wilde Says She Was Accused of 'Forgetting' Her Children

During her conversation with host Alex Cooper, Wilde addressed the reaction she received after beginning her relationship with Styles.

She said she was particularly hurt by claims that she had prioritised her personal life over her children, despite continuing to co-parent her two children, Otis, 12, and Daisy, 9.

'That hurt', Wilde said when discussing the public reaction.

She recalled that headlines and online commentary suggested she had 'abandoned her family' and moved on too quickly after her split. Wilde said those accusations ignored the reality of shared parenting arrangements and painted an unfair picture of her commitment as a mother.

Actress Highlights Different Treatment of Mothers and Fathers

Wilde pointed to the Thanksgiving period as an example of what she described as a clear double standard. She explained that while she spent the holiday with her children, Sudeikis was photographed abroad with his then-girlfriend Keeley Hazell.

Wilde said she noticed a difference in how the two situations were presented publicly.

'Everything was as it should be. Kids were with me, and Jason was photographed with his girlfriend on the beach in Costa Rica or something. And the press were like, "Yay for him. He looks so happy, so wonderful"', she said.

She added that she believed she would have faced far harsher criticism if their positions had been reversed.

'If I was away from my children on a national holiday frolicking on a beach, it'd be like, literally, just burn her at the stake now', Wilde said.

The Pressure Celebrity Mothers Face Under Public Scrutiny

Wilde's comments reflect a broader conversation about how celebrity mothers are often judged differently from fathers.

Women in the public eye frequently face scrutiny over how they balance parenting, relationships and professional commitments, with personal decisions often viewed through the lens of motherhood.

The actress said she experienced this whenever she was photographed away from her children, even during periods when she was not scheduled to have custody.

'People would be like, "Well, my, my, my. Oh, she forgot her kids. I guess she forgot. She's a mom". It was nuts', she said.

Olivia Wilde Says Raising Her Children Remains Her Priority

Despite the public attention surrounding her personal life, Wilde has consistently spoken about her dedication to parenting. She shares two children with Sudeikis and has previously discussed wanting them to grow up with confidence, independence and awareness of social expectations.

In an interview with InStyle, Wilde spoke about raising a son and daughter and how parenting had made her more aware of gender roles.

'Having a boy and a girl, you really notice gender politics within your own home', she said.

She also spoke about encouraging her daughter Daisy to recognise her own strength.

'With Daisy, I have witnessed how women are born with an incredible amount of strength and that society quickly pushes them to assume the more feminine role', Wilde said.

From Hollywood Actress To Acclaimed Filmmaker

Beyond her personal life, Wilde has continued building her career as a director, following the success of Booksmart and Don't Worry Darling.

However, her latest comments highlight a different challenge faced by women in entertainment: navigating fame while being judged for personal choices in ways that often extend beyond their professional achievements.

Wilde's Comments Reignite Debate Over the 'Perfect Mother' Expectation

The actress's remarks have reopened conversations about whether mothers — famous or otherwise — are held to unrealistic standards compared with fathers.

Her experience highlights how quickly public opinion can shift from celebrating a woman's success to questioning her choices once she becomes a mother.

For Wilde, the controversy was not simply about a celebrity romance—it was about the expectation that women must constantly prove they are prioritising motherhood, even when balancing careers, relationships and family life.
