A systematic review and meta-analysis published in Frontiers in Psychology this month examined 44 studies of doomscrolling. Researchers found associations between the behaviour and anxiety, depression, psychological distress, lower psychological wellbeing and lower life satisfaction.
The researchers stressed that the study does not prove doomscrolling itself causes poorer mental health. They define doomscrolling more specifically than simply spending too much time on social media. It involves repeatedly consuming predominantly negative, threatening or distressing information and struggling to disengage from it.
That makes Klementina's encounter with Cruise an especially funny example of a very modern phenomenon. To an outsider, someone sitting hunched over a phone and staring intently at the screen can look genuinely troubled. Sometimes, however, they're just three hundred posts deep and have absolutely no idea how they got there.
