Vibram FiveFingers
The divisive Vibram FiveFingers are stepping into the fashion spotlight Vibram

Once dismissed as one of fashion's strangest footwear choices, Vibram FiveFingers are having a very unexpected moment. The distinctive five-toe shoes, which look more like gloves for your feet than conventional trainers, have gone from niche outdoor equipment to a highly visible fashion statement, helped by TikTok, the gorpcore revival and a growing list of celebrity fans.

The transformation is more than anecdotal. According to Lyst, traffic for Vibram FiveFinger shoes jumped 110% in the second quarter of 2025, putting the unusual footwear firmly on fashion's radar. What was once considered too weird to wear is now being styled by some of the biggest names in fashion and music, proving that the right trend can make even the most polarising shoes suddenly desirable.

From Outdoor Gear to Fashion Statement

The story of FiveFingers began long before TikTok made them fashionable. Italian designer Robert Fliri developed the original concept in 1999, inspired by the sensation of moving outdoors with a more natural, barefoot-like feel while still having protection for the feet.

That 1999 date refers to Fliri's original concept, rather than the commercial launch of FiveFingers. Vibram subsequently developed the idea into a commercial product, with its own history recording 2002 as the year it developed the FiveFingers 'foot glove' concept. The product was presented globally in 2006 and was named one of Time magazine's Best Inventions of 2007.

Originally associated with activities including trail running, hiking, climbing and fitness, the shoes were designed around a minimalist construction that separates the toes while providing protection underneath the foot.

For years, that unusual appearance kept FiveFingers firmly in the 'functional rather than fashionable' category. Now, that may be precisely what makes them appealing.

The 'Ugly' Shoe Becomes an It Item

The latest FiveFingers revival fits neatly into fashion's growing obsession with deliberately unconventional footwear. From chunky trainers to fisherman sandals and other so-called ugly, designers and shoppers have increasingly embraced styles that prioritise personality over traditional ideas of elegance.

FiveFingers take that trend to an extreme. Their instantly recognisable toe compartments make them almost impossible to mistake for ordinary trainers. Rather than trying to hide their unusual construction, fashion followers are embracing it as the entire point.

TikTok and Instagram have played a major role, with users posting unboxing videos, outfit ideas and styling videos around the shoes. Searches and interest around barefoot footwear, gorpcore and FiveFingers have helped push the style beyond its original outdoor audience.

Celebrities Give FiveFingers Their Fashion Credibility

Celebrity adoption has arguably been the biggest shift in perception. Blackpink star Jennie, model Paloma Elsesser, rapper Doechii and fashion figure Gilda Ambrosio have all been associated with the footwear, helping turn FiveFingers from an eccentric performance shoe into something that looks increasingly at home in a fashion wardrobe.

Elsesser has been particularly significant because her appearance in the shoes helped challenge the idea that FiveFingers could only work with technical outdoor clothing.

Lyst's Global Head of Influence, Ira Tassoulis, pointed to the same phenomenon, noting how unlikely it initially seemed to see someone such as Elsesser wearing them before the style became increasingly accepted.

It is the classic fashion formula: once the right people start wearing something strange, the strangeness itself can become desirable.

Balenciaga Turned the Weirdness Into Luxury

FiveFingers also received a major fashion-world endorsement when Balenciaga collaborated with Vibram in 2020.

The partnership pushed the distinctive five-toe construction into luxury fashion, including a dramatic heeled design that transformed the practical-looking footwear into something far more theatrical.

That collaboration mattered because it blurred the boundary between outdoor performance gear and high fashion. FiveFingers were no longer simply something worn for running or hiking. They had become a design statement in their own right.

How Fashion Insiders Are Styling Them

The secret to making FiveFingers look intentional is often to contrast their highly technical shape with softer, more polished clothing.

Fashion followers have paired them with flowing trousers, oversized outerwear, relaxed tailoring and dresses. The result is deliberately unexpected: feminine or sophisticated clothes combined with footwear that looks almost futuristic.

Vibram has also expanded beyond the original athletic aesthetic. Styles such as the V-Soul give the five-toe concept a more fashion-led shape, with a Mary Jane-inspired silhouette that makes the shoes easier to incorporate into everyday outfits.

Have the 'Ugliest' Shoes Finally Won?

The appeal of Vibram FiveFingers is not that everyone suddenly thinks they are beautiful. Quite the opposite. Their success comes from being recognisable, divisive and slightly ridiculous-looking. In a fashion landscape increasingly driven by individuality and viral micro-trends, that can be an advantage.

And with Lyst recording a 110% increase in traffic during the second quarter of 2025, there is clear evidence that curiosity around the shoes has moved well beyond their original niche.

The 'ugliest' shoes may never become universally attractive. But with celebrities embracing them, luxury designers reworking them and social media turning their unusual shape into a talking point, FiveFingers have achieved something arguably more valuable in fashion: they have become cool because they look different.
