Taylor Swift may not have attended the 2026 American Music Awards, but that did little to stop her from becoming one of the most talked-about celebrities of the weekend. Instead of walking the red carpet in Las Vegas, the singer was spotted sitting courtside with Travis Kelce at the Cleveland Cavaliers vs New York Knicks playoff game—and fans immediately began asking the same question: why skip the AMAs altogether?

The timing only added to the curiosity. Swift had received eight nominations at this year's ceremony for her album The Life of a Showgirl, including Artist of the Year, Favourite Female Pop Artist and Song of the Year. Given her long history with the awards show, many expected at least a surprise appearance.

Instead, while the AMAs unfolded inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena on 26 May, Swift spent the weekend in Cleveland wearing coordinated designer denim with Kelce and looking noticeably relaxed away from the awards-show spotlight.

And honestly, the courtside appearance may have generated just as much attention as an AMA red carpet would have.

Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce Leaned Into Coordinated Denim Style

For their latest public outing, the couple looked completely in sync style-wise without appearing overly polished or staged.

Swift wore a patchwork Stella McCartney denim bomber jacket with wide-leg jeans and strappy heels, keeping the look casual but still unmistakably designer. Underneath, she added a chain-trimmed tank top from McCartney's H&M collaboration, mixing luxury fashion with a more accessible piece in a way that felt surprisingly effortless.

She accessorised with a black Dior handbag and her custom engagement ring from Kelce, which fans quickly zoomed in on in photos from the game.

Kelce matched the denim-heavy aesthetic in a Louis Vuitton shirt and coordinating trousers, paired with Cartier jewellery, Nike LeBron trainers and a Cavaliers-inspired cap in the team's wine-and-gold colours.

The styling felt relaxed overall, but intentional enough that social media immediately turned it into a full couple-fashion moment.

Swift's AMAs Absence Became Part of the Conversation

Swift's decision not to attend the ceremony came as a surprise largely because she remains so closely tied to the AMAs.

She currently holds the record as the most-awarded artist in the show's history, with 40 wins, and fans had expected this year to potentially add even more to that total following the success of The Life of a Showgirl.

But according to reports, Swift was never scheduled to appear at the event despite the nominations.

No official reason has been given for the absence, which has naturally fuelled speculation online. Some fans wondered whether she was intentionally stepping back from major public appearances again, while others pointed out that Swift has seemed increasingly selective about where and when she shows up over the past year.

That shift has become more noticeable recently. Outside of carefully chosen appearances, Swift has largely stayed away from the kind of constant public visibility that once surrounded every album era.

Courtside Taylor is Becoming Its Own Style Era

Interestingly, the basketball appearance felt very in line with the more relaxed image Swift has been leaning into lately.

Since her relationship with Kelce became public in 2023, sports appearances have quietly become some of her biggest fashion moments. Whether she's attending NFL games or sitting courtside during the NBA playoffs, her outfits tend to spark almost instant conversation online.

Denim, in particular, has become a recurring theme.

Fans still remember the Ksubi shorts she wore to her first Chiefs game, followed by the designer corsets, embellished cut-offs and custom game-day looks that came afterwards. This latest Stella McCartney outfit felt slightly more grown-up than some of those earlier appearances, though still playful enough to fit the atmosphere of a playoff game.

More than anything, the look worked because it didn't feel too try-hard. It looked like something she genuinely wanted to wear rather than something built purely for photographs.

Fans Seemed More Interested in the Vibe Than the Game Itself

Photos and videos from the night quickly spread online, with many fans focusing less on the basketball itself and more on how comfortable Swift and Kelce appeared together.

Kelce was seen hyping up the crowd throughout the evening, at one point drinking a beer to loud cheers from nearby fans, while Swift laughed beside him and stayed relatively low-key throughout the game.

A lot of the online reaction centred on how natural the relationship appeared in public settings. Some fans even commented that Swift seemed noticeably more relaxed compared to her highly scrutinised red carpet appearances.

That contrast may partly explain why her courtside outing ended up generating so much attention despite missing one of the biggest music events of the year.

Red Carpets Are No Longer the Only Fashion Moments That Matter

A few years ago, skipping an awards show like the AMAs would likely have meant disappearing from the conversation completely for the night.

That no longer feels true.

Celebrity fashion moments now happen everywhere—courtside seats, dinner dates, airport paparazzi shots, even casual walks through New York. In many cases, those off-duty appearances end up feeling more influential because they appear less controlled than traditional red carpet styling.

Swift and Kelce's coordinated denim looks tapped directly into that shift. It wasn't dramatic or overly theatrical, but it still dominated social feeds within hours.

So while fans may have hoped for a surprise AMAs appearance, Swift still managed to control part of the cultural conversation that weekend without stepping anywhere near the stage.
