Police said they found human legs in a refrigerator at a rented ground-floor flat in Lung Mei Village, Tai Po, on 24 February 2023, alongside two large cooking pots. A Hong Kong court has now heard that the remains of 28-year-old Abby Choi were in those pots, together with carrots.

Police said the house had been set up as a butchery site, and prosecutors told the jury that a meat mincer and electric saw were bought days earlier. Her ex-husband Alex Kwong, his brother Anthony and their father Kwong Kau deny murder. The question at the centre of the High Court trial is whether a luxury flat was enough to turn a family against the woman who supported them.

Who Was Abby Choi?

Born on 15 July 1994, Choi built a career as a Hong Kong fashion fixture, amassing over 100,000 Instagram followers and posing on the digital cover of L'Officiel Monaco just days before her death. Front-row appearances at Paris Fashion Week and spreads in Vogue China established her as an international style icon, yet behind the luxury brand partnerships was a mother of four and an animal welfare advocate bankrolling two households.

She married Alex Kwong at 18 and had two children before their divorce; she later had two more with her second husband, Chris Tam. Choi kept her former in-laws on her payroll, even hiring Kwong's brother, Anthony, as her personal driver. Her generosity extended to buying a luxury apartment in Kadoorie Hill, Ho Man Tin, one of Hong Kong's most exclusive addresses, for her children and former in-laws.

The High Court heard the price was more than HK$60 million (approximately £5.7 million or $7.6 million), though other accounts put it nearer HK$72.8 million (approximately £7.01 million or $9.2 million). Choi's mother testified that the property was registered in former father-in-law Kwong Kau's name to avoid HK$9 million (about £866,000 or $1.1 million) in stamp duty, on a verbal promise that he would hand it over whenever she asked.

Was Kindness Her Downfall?

Prosecutors say things turned in 2022, when Choi decided to sell. They say Kwong Kau became deeply resentful and believed he could move back in if she died, and her mother testified that he threatened to kill Choi and her family.

On the afternoon of 21 February 2023, CCTV shown to the jury allegedly captures Choi getting into a seven-seater van shortly before a school run. Anthony Kwong was driving, and prosecutors say Alex Kwong joined the vehicle at another location. The prosecution says a hammer bought by Anthony is believed to be the murder weapon and that Choi's blood was found in the van alongside the brothers' DNA. It described the blows as savage.

What Does the Defence Say?

The defence disputes the prosecution's version of the flat. Counsel for Kwong Kau told Choi's mother this week that he paid half the price, that Choi used a nominee owner to avoid stamp duty, which could be illegal, and that he never threatened her family. She rejected it all and demanded proof. All three men have pleaded not guilty to murder. Alex and Anthony Kwong have admitted preventing the lawful burial of a body, while Kwong Kau denies that charge.

Choi's former mother-in-law, Jenny Li, was jailed for 18 months in October 2025 for perverting the course of justice after urging her son to go into hiding. Dozens of people queued outside the High Court when the murder trial opened on 21 September 2026. The jury is still hearing evidence and the full defence case is to come, so a verdict on who killed Abby Choi is not expected before the trial runs into December.
