Then the internet started doing a fashion price check. A viral post claimed Wang was actually wearing a £600 ($800) Hermès 'hunter classic shirt', £900 ($1,200) Loro Piana trousers and £1,125 ($1,500) Ferragamo shoes, putting the supposed outfit at £2,625 ($3,500).
There was just one problem. Wang himself stepped in to say those luxury labels and prices were wrong, turning what looked like a quiet-luxury fashion story into something much cheaper.
The £2,625 Outfit Claim
The price breakdown spread after Wang appeared at Meta Connect 2026 on Wednesday, 23 September. The image labelled his shirt as Hermès, his trousers as Loro Piana and his shoes as Ferragamo, making his simple-looking clothes appear to be a major fashion flex.

Goltra shared the image on X and wrote, 'You guys think @alexandr_wang is underdressed but he's literally flexing on you like crazy lol.' The post added, 'There are levels to this,' as users reacted to the supposed £2,625 ($3,500) total.
The claim fit an old-fashioned joke: an outfit can look basic while secretly costing thousands. But reporting examining Wang's clothes could not verify the luxury labels shown in the viral graphic, and Wang soon provided a very different price breakdown himself.
Wang Corrects the Record
Wang responded to the viral claims on Thursday, 24 September, writing, 'excuse me I must correct the record on this slander.' He then shared his own details about what he was wearing, directly challenging the expensive fashion claims.
According to Wang, the deer T-shirt was a £23 ($30) thrift-store find from Santa Cruz rather than a £600 ($800) Hermès top. He also said his Crocs cost around £45 ($60). Business Insider found similar vintage deer-print shirts listed online for roughly £11 to £34 ($14 to $45).
What Wang Actually Wore
The shirt itself appears to be a vintage-style camouflage top with deer across the front and 'Lake Tahoe' printed on the sleeve. Business Insider found similar 1990s 'Back to Earth' shirts selling second-hand for between £11 and £34 ($14 and $45), although the exact maker of Wang's shirt has not been independently confirmed.

Wang paired the shirt with dark trousers and camouflage Crocs. While he publicly identified the price of his shirt and Crocs, reporting has not independently established the exact brand and purchase price of every item he wore.

Wang is Meta's chief AI officer. His appearance at Meta Connect came as the company continued pushing its AI products, with Wang himself promoting Meta's Muse agent heavily online.
His low-key wardrobe stands out because some of Silicon Valley's biggest figures have long had recognisable work uniforms. Steve Jobs became known for black turtlenecks, while Nvidia boss Jensen Huang is closely linked with leather jackets, and Mark Zuckerberg has moved beyond his old grey T-shirt image.
Wang may now be building a recognisable look of his own, but the viral £2,625 ($3,500) outfit is not what it first appeared to be.
