Alyssa Milano has opened up about the severe postpartum anxiety she faced after giving birth to her son in 2011. The actress shared her story again as the trial of Lindsay Clancy brings fresh attention to maternal mental health and the need for mothers to get help.
Milano said her own experience was different from Clancy's case, but she felt the wider conversation about postpartum mental health was important. She also revealed that her anxiety became so severe that she went to an emergency room and asked to be admitted to a psychiatric ward.
Alyssa Milano's Postpartum Anxiety Began After Birth
Milano became a mother to her son Milo in 2011, but the birth did not go as she had planned. She had expected a vaginal birth, yet complications meant she needed a C-section 10 days before her due date.
The actress said her first major anxiety attack came on the night she and her baby returned home from hospital. She felt she had already let her child down because she could not give birth vaginally or breastfeed as she had hoped.
Milano described feeling intense fear in her body during the attack. Her heart raced, her stomach tightened, and she felt as if she was dying, showing how powerful her anxiety had become.
She Struggled with Fear After Returning to Work
Things became harder when Milo became sick shortly before Milano was due to return to work. She was preparing to film a TV show while also dealing with the guilt many new mothers feel when they have to leave their children.
Milano said her anxiety grew while she was at work. She would drive there thinking about all the ways Milo could die while he was being cared for by someone else.
Her long working days also made the situation worse. After spending up to 16 hours at work, she would finally hold her son and put him to sleep, but the fear she had carried throughout the day would often end in another severe anxiety attack.
Lindsay Clancy Trial Renewed the Conversation
Milano decided to share her story again while the trial involving Lindsay Clancy was bringing renewed attention to postpartum mental health. Clancy is accused of killing her three young children in 2023 and has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
Her lawyers have argued that Clancy was experiencing postpartum psychosis at the time of the deaths. Postpartum psychosis is different from postpartum anxiety, and Milano made clear that she was not comparing her personal experience with Clancy's case.
Instead, Milano said the two situations highlight the need to take serious mental health symptoms in mothers seriously. She stressed that symptoms should be recognised, believed and treated as quickly as possible.
She Wants Mothers To Get Help Without Fear
Milano also pointed out that mental illness does not always look obvious from the outside. A person may appear to be coping while privately dealing with intense fear, panic or other serious symptoms.
The actress said people facing mental health problems should not have extra barriers placed in front of them when they need care. Her own experience showed her how important access to professional help can be during a difficult time.
She ended her message with a call for more open conversations about mental health. Milano also urged people to support mothers who may be struggling and reminded them that they should not have to face these challenges alone.
Why Postpartum Mental Health Matters
Postpartum anxiety can have a major effect on a new mother's daily life. Constant fear, panic and worry can make it difficult to sleep, work, care for a baby or enjoy the early days of motherhood.
Milano's story also shows why asking for help should not be seen as a failure. Reaching out to a doctor or mental health professional can be an important step when anxiety becomes difficult to manage.
For mothers experiencing severe anxiety or other worrying symptoms after childbirth, speaking with a healthcare professional can help them understand what is happening and find the right support. No mother should feel ashamed for needing help during such a major change in her life.
