'Fake hair, real bump,' Hathaway wrote alongside a behind-the-scenes video from the event. Her post followed comments questioning whether she was wearing a prosthetic stomach, despite the Les Misérables Oscar winner publicly announcing in June that she and husband Adam Shulman are expecting their third child.
A Daring Maternity Look Sparked the Claims
Hathaway arrived at the film's premiere on Sunday, 9 August in Burbank, California, wearing a custom Atelier Prabal Gurung halter top. The sculptural silk design featured an ice-blue front, vivid crimson lining and a dramatic train, leaving her stomach completely visible. Stylist Erin Walsh paired it with low-rise La Ligne jeans, Aquazzura heels and Bulgari jewellery.
Images of The Devil Wears Prada star quickly circulated across TikTok and X, where some users claimed the shape of her stomach appeared artificial. 'I'm sorry but that looks fake,' one TikTok commenter wrote, while another alleged that body makeup had been applied. Other users defended Hathaway and noted that pregnancy bumps naturally differ in shape, size and position.
Hathaway's video offered an unfiltered look at the work behind her red-carpet appearance. As her team constructed her voluminous ponytail, the actor admitted that the hair was not entirely hers. The film opens internationally on 12 August before reaching North American cinemas on 14 August.
Hathaway, whose credits also include The Princess Diaries and The Dark Knight Rises, did not issue a lengthy statement about the speculation. Instead, four words redirected attention from internet theories to what she had already made clear: the hairpiece was artificial, but her pregnancy was not.
