School Bus
A California school bus dispute spiralled into children climbing through windows, shattered glass door and a mother climbing into the vehicle before her arrest Pexels

A California mother was arrested after allegedly smashing the glass in a school bus door and climbing through an open window as students were also climbing out of the vehicle during a chaotic stop in Calaveras County. The incident unfolded on 24 August 2026 along Highway 49 near Russell Road in San Andreas, after a Calaveras Unified School District driver stopped to address student behaviour. What began as an attempt to restore order escalated within minutes into broken glass, children exiting through windows and a parent entering through one.

Sheriff's officials said the parent struck the bus door hard enough to break its glass before being taken into custody at the school district's request for suspected vandalism. Video from inside the stationary bus showed multiple students climbing out through open windows, while the parent later climbed in through another window and confronted the driver. Sheriff's arrest logs identify the parent as Kathleen Kraker, 35, of Sheep Ranch.

Four Minutes Before Chaos

The school district has pushed back on viral claims that students were trapped on the bus for nearly an hour before parents intervened. Superintendent Kassie Meeks said a review of bus footage showed the vehicle was stopped for about four minutes while the driver addressed concerning behaviour, reviewed expectations and asked students to calm down. During that period, one student exited through a window, after which the situation outside the bus began to escalate.

According to the district, Kraker then began banging on the bus door and ultimately broke the glass. Law enforcement was contacted, and the California Highway Patrol was also notified because damage to a school bus with students aboard triggers additional safety procedures. Students were directed to remain seated and calm while authorities responded, with the district saying law enforcement arrived roughly 14 minutes after the escalation began and about 18 minutes after the bus first reached the stop.

Parent Climbs in as Students Climb Out

The visual that sent the incident viral came next: students were climbing out while a parent was climbing in. The district said an adult outside the bus could be heard encouraging students to leave through the windows, leading additional passengers to do so. A 12-year-old passenger later described the bus as 'rowdy' before the driver stopped and said students were eager to get off when the situation began spiralling.

Another parent who arrived at the scene said she asked the driver to release her child but was refused. 'Open the door. Let me have my kid', she recalled telling him before eventually allowing her son to climb through a window. Other parents took the opposite approach, telling their children to remain seated until the situation was resolved.

District Backs Driver

The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office said bus windows should only be used as exits during an emergency and urged both students and adults to follow school bus safety rules. 'The parent struck the bus door, breaking the glass,' sheriff's spokesperson Jason Waite said. The district separately said no actual bus windows were broken, clarifying that the damaged glass was part of the door.

Meeks said the district believes the driver 'acted appropriately under extremely challenging circumstances' and remained focused on student safety and de-escalation.

The district said it was reviewing student conduct and taking appropriate action, while the damaged bus affected the route as repairs were carried out.

The Calaveras County District Attorney's Office confirmed Kraker was arraigned on 26 August on felony vandalism and misdemeanour unauthorised entry onto a school bus, with further arraignment scheduled for 14 September 2026.
