Less than two weeks after Kensington Palace announced that Prince George would be heading to Eton College in September, his mother took him to a Royal Air Force (RAF) base. The young man was dressed in a navy blazer, while Kate Middleton swapped her usual heels for flat brown loafers. Footage shared on the Wales Instagram shows the pair side by side, with most comments acknowledging how tall he's grown. Even with this small adjustment, it was clear that George, 12, was almost towering over his 5'9" mother.
The Obvious Shoe Swap
Kate built her public image partly on a pair of Gianvito Rossi pumps, wearing the 105mm suede heels at dozens of public engagements since 2016, which makes her choice for RAF Coningsby all the more striking. For the rare mother-son outing, she stepped out in chocolate-brown loafers paired with a grey houndstooth Max Mara blazer, a white top, and black cigarette trousers.
Royal forums theorise that Kate intentionally made herself appear shorter so that George, who turns 13 next month, would look more in command. With this appearance coming just eleven days after the Eton announcement, the timing alone raises questions.
Before You Call it a Conspiracy
While the theories are plausible, there was probably a more valid reason for this style choice. The visit focused on the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, where both mother and son climbed into the cockpits of World War II planes. The Spitfire and Lancaster cockpits were not designed for a princess wearing stilettos, which makes a strong case for wearing flats.
However, Kate Middleton has been photographed playing volleyball in wedge heels. The idea that she picked flats for a televised royal outing without considering the optics does not quite hold up. She wore flat shoes with George to Eton just three years ago, so there is a notable pattern here.
This Was Never About a Growth Spurt

Prince William stands at 6'3", while Kate measures at 5'9". It was only natural that George would eventually bridge that height gap. Styling is how they control when the world notices. Since George's birth in 2013, Kate has taken and shared her own photographs of the royal children, enabling her to manage aspects of royal life that previous generations could not.
Royal watchers have pointed out that she applies the same level of precision to her wardrobe choices. As the future commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, this visit marks the beginning of a much larger narrative. When viewed alongside the news from Eton, it's difficult to believe this is merely a coincidence.
Why Wasn't Prince William Present?
William was absent from the trip, though the visit was always likely to be Kate's alone. As Royal Honorary Air Commodore of RAF Coningsby since 2023, this was her base, her role, and on the strength of that footage, her moment to share with her son.
With George heading to Eton in September and his thirteenth birthday just weeks away, the timing of this outing feels deliberate. Whether the flat shoes were part of that or simply the sensible choice for a day spent climbing into Spitfire cockpits, the image they produced tells its own story. George, standing tall with his mother, looked less like a child on a school trip and more like a royal child being introduced to his future role.
