Dior has brought the statement necklace back into focus with Diorissima, the latest Haute Joaillerie collection by creative director Victoire de Castellane. The collection moves away from the understated jewellery associated with the quiet luxury trend, instead using vivid colour, intricate craftsmanship and elaborate combinations of stones to create pieces designed to command attention.
For several seasons, delicate chains and understated pendants have dominated jewellery styling as minimalist dressing shaped how high-end accessories are worn. Diorissima offers a distinctly different approach, placing ornate necklaces back at the centre of the conversation around contemporary fine jewellery. The result is maximalism with manners.
Diorissima Makes a Case for More
First unveiled in Venice in May, Diorissima comprises 112 jewels inspired by art and the city itself. De Castellane approaches the collection almost like a collage or mosaic, bringing floral, aquatic, and celestial references together with diamonds, sapphires, opals, turquoise, mother-of-pearl, and lacquer.
One necklace sends more than 3,000 diamonds radiating around the neck from a 7.03-carat cushion-cut solitaire stone. Then a pink wisteria design carries 4,100 diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and spinels. Yet some of Diorissima's most interesting pieces prove statement jewellery does not need to rely on sheer carat weight.
The Diorissima Lucky Flowers necklace, for example, layers thin slices of chrysoprase, aventurine, turquoise, chalcedony, and opal. Using a doublet technique, it creates clover-like leaves topped with 178 pear-cut diamonds.
On another note, in crystal traditions, these stones are said to call in luck, love, and emotional healing. Aventurine, known as the 'Stone of Opportunity', even has a reputation as a powerful manifestation crystal. Whether these notions were included in Dior's design process or not, fashionistas are feeling quite lucky with the return of more-than-quiet luxury.
The Craftsmanship Behind the Scenes Gets a Spotlight
Dior has also been pulling back the curtain on how the collection is made, sharing close-up footage of artisans assembling the intricate pieces by hand. That transparency became part of the fascination online, especially on their Instagram page. Aside from the value of the brand and materials, the human skill behind the gems makes it easy to understand the luxury behind handmade goods.
'This is beyond outstanding. Plus the transparency in showing the manufacturing method is commendable,' one commenter wrote.
'The Art and Skills behind this masterpiece are admirable,' another added. Others called the pieces 'exquisite craftsmanship', 'a work of art' and 'unbelievably gorgeous'.
One particularly relatable admirer simply told Dior: 'You just want all my money.' They probably do, and fashionistas all over the globe are offended to the point of checking out and swiping credit cards.
The Statement Necklace Grows Up
After seasons dominated by whisper-thin chains and jewellery designed to disappear into an outfit, Diorissima treats the neckline like valuable fashion real estate again.
But this is not necessarily a return to the chunky bib necklaces that once ruled jewellery boxes. De Castellane's version is more intricate and sophisticated. Diamonds mingle with lacquer. Fine stones sit beside ornamental materials. Florals collide with celestial shapes, and several necklaces are designed to be a harmonious focal point rather than to challenge the rest of your ensemble to a duel of 'clashcore'.
Historically speaking, not every statement necklace has something to say. Diorissima, however, knows how to convey its message without raising its voice.
