Dolly Parton and Eminem may not immediately sound like two names destined to share a sentence, but a letter from 2022 begs to differ.
One built a career on rhinestones, country storytelling, and empowering blonde hair. The other emerged from Detroit armed with furious rhyme schemes running at 800 miles per hour and a vocabulary that could make Dollywood's gift shop blush.
You'd think their only common denominator would be their massive success in the music industry, yet somewhere between 'Jolene' and 'Lose Yourself', Dolly Parton felt a connection.
Following the country legend's passing, Eminem revealed a remarkably sweet letter Parton sent him in 2022 after they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
They never actually met, and somehow, that gave the note even more power to break and warm the hearts of those who read it.
Dolly Parton Told Eminem She Felt an 'Unexplained Connection' to Him
Parton and Eminem were both inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on 5 November 2022 alongside Lionel Richie, Duran Duran, and other music heavyweights.
Eminem was inducted by longtime collaborator Dr. Dre and delivered a career-spanning performance featuring songs including 'My Name Is' and 'Not Afraid'.
In the letter, addressed to Marshall, which is the rapper's legal first name, Parton congratulated him on his induction and praised his performance. She continued by making a wonderfully Dolly-coded confession: rap was not exactly her specialist subject.
'Even though I don't know a lot about rap music, I've come to know that you are the very best at it,' she wrote.
Then things became unexpectedly personal. Parton told Eminem she hoped what followed would not seem 'weird or strange', explaining that she had always felt an 'unexplained connection' to him, almost as though she somehow knew him.
She had hoped the two would meet during the ceremony, but admitted that events like the Rock Hall could become 'nuts', and the opportunity slipped away.
Instead, she sent the letter, and four years later, Eminem still had it.
Eminem Says Dolly Parton's Letter 'Really Had an Impact'
Sharing the note in tribute to the queen of country music, the famously private rapper admitted her gesture had stayed with him.
'I'm sorry we never got a chance to meet, but getting this note from Dolly really had an impact on me,' Eminem wrote.
He added that Parton 'definitely didn't have to take the time to do it', before revealing that even as a child who predominantly listened to rap, he knew exactly who Dolly Parton was.
'A superstar in every sense,' he called her.
Perhaps that is the connection hiding inside Parton's letter.
They came from radically different corners of American music, but both became masters of autobiographical storytelling. Dolly Parton could put heartbreak, poverty, humour, and ambition inside a country song. Eminem built some of hip-hop's most famous records from similarly personal material, delivering rhythmic musings too real to sugarcoat. Both stars put their names on the map, albeit one with rhinestones and the other with parental-advisory stickers.
Either way, both artists personify a mic drop.
Fans Cannot Get Over the Dolly Parton-Eminem Friendship That Almost Was
The revelation sent fans straight into that dangerous internet territory where everybody is emotional and hilarious at the same time. The tears supporters cried certainly had that signature Dolly sparkle to them, keeping the warmth and the sass alive.
'From one G.O.A.T in one genre to another,' one Facebook commenter wrote.
Another established what may now be the official law of music: 'If Dolly Parton thinks you're the best then you are the best.'
Also, naturally, somebody eventually invoked Eminem's 'Stan'.
'Dolly said, "Dear Slim, I wrote you but you still ain't callin,"' one fan joked.
Others grieved something no one previously realised could have been: a Dolly Parton and Eminem collaboration.
One suggested an Eminem-flavoured version of '9 to 5', while another declared that a joint track 'would have broken records'.
Frankly, Dolly singing the chorus while Eminem explains exactly what working 9 to 5 does to his blood pressure feels like a lost cultural opportunity.
Still, the sweetest observation may have been much simpler.
'She gave him his flowers privately,' one fan noted.
No cameras were attached to the gesture, and no collaboration was promoted. Parton simply saw another artist doing something exceptionally well and decided he ought to know it. While she may have made it big as a brilliant singer and songwriter, the letter she penned for Eminem might just be one of the warmest things she has ever written.
Dolly Parton and Eminem never got their meeting, but somewhere in 2022, the queen of country sat down and wrote a letter to rap royalty, telling him his work reached people in more ways than one.
Four years later, he showed the world that hers did, too.
