Lin-Manuel Miranda put 'human animators' front and centre during an emotional musical acceptance speech at D23, with one line from his Disney Legends induction quickly becoming the moment viewers could not stop talking about. The Hamilton creator was honoured on 16 August 2026 at the Disney Legends Awards Ceremony at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, where he delivered his thank you speech by rewriting lyrics to 'Part of Your World' from The Little Mermaid.
Instead of giving a conventional acceptance speech, Miranda sang his gratitude to the artists and collaborators behind his Disney work, including a pointedly specific thank you: 'Grateful for each human animator.' Clips of the moment spread across Instagram and Threads after the ceremony, where viewers singled out the word 'human' at a time when generative artificial intelligence remains a major topic across entertainment and animation.
The 'Human Animators' Line Gets Attention
Miranda did not explicitly mention AI or describe the lyric as criticism of artificial intelligence. However, viewers immediately picked up on the wording, turning a few seconds of his wider acceptance song into one of the most discussed parts of the ceremony online.
The timing also gave the comment additional context. In December 2025, The Walt Disney Company announced an agreement with OpenAI that would allow Sora and ChatGPT Images to generate fan inspired content using more than 200 Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars characters, alongside a planned $1 billion Disney investment in OpenAI.
Disney said at the time that the companies were committed to responsible, human-centred AI and protecting creators and their works.
Miranda's remark therefore arrived as questions surrounding human creativity and generative technology remain part of the wider entertainment conversation. There is no indication that his lyric was intended as a direct response to Disney's AI plans, but fans nevertheless interpreted his emphasis on human artists as meaningful. The original speech remained primarily a celebration of the people who helped turn his music into animated films.
Lin Manuel Miranda Turns His Speech Into a Disney Song
The tribute began before Miranda even reached the microphone. Moana star Auli'i Cravalho introduced the songwriter as the first Disney Legend inducted during the ceremony, telling the audience: 'He doesn't just write music; he writes masterpieces.' Performers including Jordan Fisher, Wayne Brady, Mandy Gonzalez, James Monroe Iglehart and Cravalho then took part in a medley spanning Miranda's stage and Disney catalogue.
For his acceptance, Miranda carried his notes inside a Little Mermaid VHS clamshell case and borrowed the melody of Ariel's signature song, 'Part of Your World'. His rewritten lyrics looked back at being a Disney obsessed child singing along with Sebastian and playing the songs on a Casio keyboard. He also thanked the collaborators who later helped him become part of the same creative tradition he had grown up watching.
From 'Moana' to 'Encanto'
Miranda's Disney connection stretches across some of the company's biggest musical releases of the past decade. He wrote songs for 2016's Moana, including 'How Far I'll Go' and 'You're Welcome', before creating the songs for 2021's Encanto, whose 'We Don't Talk About Bruno' became a global chart hit. He later wrote music for Mufasa: The Lion King and contributed new songs to the 2023 live action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.
His Disney Legends induction effectively brought that history full circle. Miranda ended his musical speech by singing that he was grateful to be 'part of your world', turning the song that helped shape his childhood into a thank you to the artists who helped shape his own Disney career. For viewers online, however, five words became the standout: 'Grateful for each human animator.'
