Emily Ratajkowski is facing a fresh wave of online criticism after a photograph of the model holding her five-year-old son, Sylvester, resurfaced alongside controversial comments she made about becoming a single mother.

The image has sparked fierce debate on Reddit, with some users criticising the way she appeared to be holding her child, while others revisited her provocative remarks about having a child with the 'wrong man'.

One Reddit discussion attracted thousands of votes as users debated both the photograph and Ratajkowski's comments on motherhood, creating a double backlash over her words and her public image as a mother.

Reddit users debate Emily Ratajkowski’s viral photo and her remarks on motherhood

Ratajkowski's 'Wrong Man' Comments Return to Spotlight

The controversy stems from Ratajkowski's essay Sex As a Single Mom, published by The Cut, in which she reflected on the collapse of her marriage to film producer Sebastian Bear-McClard and her fears surrounding single motherhood.

She wrote: 'Even as a kid, I reasoned that of all the things I could grow up to be, it was crucial to avoid becoming a single mom.'

She also recalled the message she had absorbed about having children with the wrong partner, writing: 'Having a child with the wrong man was the fastest way to ruin your life as a woman — it meant having no freedom, no choices, no emergency exit. All baggage and no security.'

The remark has been debated online, with some interpreting it as a bleak statement about motherhood, while others argue that Ratajkowski was describing the consequences of remaining permanently connected to an unsuitable partner through a child.

Importantly, she was describing a fear she had about becoming a single mother—not saying that her son had ruined her life.

Ratajkowski became a mother to Sylvester in 2021 with Bear-McClard. In her essay, she described motherhood during a turbulent period in which her marriage subsequently collapsed. She said the couple stopped having sex six months after their son's birth and separated less than a year later.

Critics Take Aim at Viral Baby Photograph

The discussion took another turn when Reddit users focused on the photograph of Ratajkowski holding Sylvester.

Some questioned the child's position and claimed the image made him appear more like a prop or accessory than a child being held naturally.

'That poor child she's holding like a sack of potatoes,' one Reddit user wrote.

Another comment read: 'Being a child with the wrong parents.'

A third user offered a more nuanced view of Ratajkowski's original remarks, writing: 'A former colleague of mine said once that he had the right kids with the wrong woman. I think that is well put considering that it's difficult for a normal person to not love ones children even when the other parent was a douchebag.'

Not everyone agreed with the criticism.

Some users pointed out that a single photograph captures only one moment and cannot establish how Ratajkowski normally cares for her son. Others argued that the reaction had been fuelled by the provocative combination of the photograph and her essay.

Some also accused critics of stripping her comments of context, noting that she was discussing childhood fears about single motherhood and her experience after her marriage ended.

Ratajkowski has not publicly responded to the Reddit discussion.

For now, the debate centres on two questions: what she meant by having a child with the 'wrong man', and whether one viral photograph can fairly define how she mothers her son.
