Eminem once rapped about having nothing but his mother's trailer and a dream in Detroit. Now he is handing over the physical proof of everything that dream built, all 117 pairs of it, so another generation of kids from his city will never have to feel that same emptiness.
The rapper has partnered with Julien's Auctions to sell his personal sneaker collection to benefit the Marshall Mathers Foundation, the charity he set up to support disadvantaged and at-risk youth in Detroit.
Every pair carries his autograph, and the standout lot, the Air Jordan 3 'Slim Shady' PE he wore during his Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show in 2022, is already sitting at $8,000 and expected to sail past an estimated $25,000, or roughly £20,000.
How To Bid on a Piece of Slim Shady's Closet
Bidding is now live through Julien's Auctions and runs until the sale on 25 August at 10 AM PT in Los Angeles. Entry prices for the 117-pair lot start at $25, but prices for rarer items rise quickly.
Signed Carhartt x Nike Air Jordan 4 promotional sneakers, which never reached retail stores, start at $4,000. Additionally, the 2017 'Encore' Air Jordan 4 possesses its own cult following among collectors.
A Full-Circle Moment for Rabbit's City
Fans have quickly noted the poetic nature of this situation.
The kid who fought his way out of a trailer park is now selling off two decades' worth of the most sought-after footwear in hip hop to finance the very opportunities he never had while growing up.
It's the kind of full-circle moment that even Rabbit, his character in 8 Mile, could not have imagined.
Player-exclusive sneakers, such as the 'Slim Shady PE', are never sold at retail.
They are created solely for the athlete or artist they represent, which is why they hold significant value in the secondary market.
The 'Encore AJ 4' has its own place in sneaker folklore, too, tied to the Undefeated AJ 4, which was considered a holy grail until Jordan Brand finally retroed it. Add Eminem's autograph to shoes with that kind of pedigree, and the appeal to collectors goes well beyond nostalgia.
The 117 pairs of shoes tell the story of a man who has worked with many major sportswear brands for two decades, including Nike, Jordan Brand, Carhartt, Puma, and Adidas. Other notable shoes being auctioned are a signed 'Puma Palace Guard' and an 'Adidas Superstar'.
Sizing runs mostly a men's 10, and every pair comes with its original box.
Clearing the Closet for Detroit's Youth
Rosenberg put it plainly: 'Marshall has always expressed his personal style through his sneakers, and he has amassed quite a collection throughout the years.' Every dollar raised goes straight to the Marshall Mathers Foundation, which provides resources and opportunity to disadvantaged and at-risk youth in Detroit and its surrounding communities, closing a loop that started with a broke kid rapping his way out of poverty.
Julien's has labelled this collection the largest single sale of Eminem material ever offered at public auction, and this claim is not an exaggeration. It features a Detroit legend who is cleaning out his own closet to create something for the city that built him first.
