Frances Bean Cobain returned to the red carpet after years away, wearing a look reminiscent of her late father Kurt Cobain's grunge style.
The 34-year-old attended The Deputy screening in Los Angeles on 22 September, wearing a long brown leather jacket, a torn black graphic T-shirt, black lace-edged shorts, white pointed boots, and a white bag.
The long leather jacket stood out, creating a visual link to photos of Kurt in similar styles during his Nirvana years.
This was Frances' first time back on the red carpet in eight years, since 2018. However, she also attended Moschino's Spring/Summer 2020 show in Los Angeles in June 2019.
Her Grunge History
Frances's connection to grunge goes back much further than this appearance.
Her fashion history includes leather, graphic T-shirts, boots, dark colors, and other items linked to the alternative style of the 1990s.
A 2011 Glamor lookback highlighted her '90s-inspired wardrobe, including denim shorts, lace tights, and knee-high boots.
Frances has also spoken about the connection between grunge and high fashion, which she finds particularly interesting.
'I find it interesting where grunge originated from and then where it was taken, which was high fashion,' she said.
'My dad was so poor that they kept going to Goodwill to get donated ripped jeans. It wasn't a fashion decision; it was an "I don't have any money. I have no other choice type of decision".'
While people often see her wardrobe through the lens of her parents – or at least the era they helped shape and had a major influence on – she has established a distinct style of her own.

Frances' husband, Riley Hawk, the son of famous skateboarder Tony Hawk, has also been compared to Kurt for many years.

Others pushed back on the comparison, 'Riley Hawk has always looked like that lmao'.
Another commenter wrote, 'I've always thought this, especially about that Isaiah guy. But I also learned in an anthropology class years ago that all people are naturally attracted to people who look like their parents or even themselves. It's why couples sometimes look alike.'

However, research on this topic is unclear. A 2008 study by psychologist Tamás Bereczkei that supported a similar idea was later retracted after researchers found mistakes in its data and analysis.
Frances and Riley married on October 7, 2023 and welcomed their son, Ronin Walker Cobain Hawk, on September 17, 2024.

Frances has spoken openly about growing up without Kurt, who died on April 5, 1994, when she was 20 months old. On the 30th anniversary of his death in 2024, she reflected on grief and how her feelings about losing him have changed over time.
