Television presenter Gayle King has issued a scathing critique of the public remarks made by Hayden Panettiere's estranged mother, Lesley Vogel.
King spoke during a broadcast of CBS Mornings on Wednesday, 19 August. She expressed deep disappointment over Vogel's initial public statement on her daughter's sudden death at the age of 36.
A Tragic Death
Panettiere was widely known for her roles in television series such as Heroes and Nashville. The actress was found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, on Sunday, 16 August.
First responders initiated advanced cardiac life support measures, but efforts were unsuccessful. She was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. While an official cause of death remains under investigation, the tragedy has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry.
Vogel Speaks Out
The controversy surrounding Panettiere's passing intensified after Vogel gave an interview to NBC News. The estranged mother did not focus solely on her late daughter's legacy.
Vogel spent a significant part of the interview criticising Panettiere's on-again, off-again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson. She claimed that Hickerson was present at the time of Panettiere's death.
'This person in her life that we have been trying to get rid of for quite some time was with her at her death and that was Brian Hickerson,' Vogel told NBC News.
She alleged that he had consistently enabled the actress's personal struggles over the years. Vogel also said that she and Panettiere had been estranged since October, describing the separation as a deliberate choice made for specific reasons.
No Mincing of Words
Reacting to the interview on live television, King did not mince her words on Vogel's choice of commentary during a time of immense grief. 'You know, guys, you read this and all I can think is, 'Thanks, Mom, for nothing,' King remarked during the morning broadcast.
King went on to describe the situation as profoundly disheartening, criticising Vogel for failing to offer a more compassionate or meaningful tribute to her late child. 'It makes me so sad of the opportunity that you have after your daughter's death that that's what you choose to leave us with,' King added, labelling the response as both 'sad' and 'unseemly.'
The televised critique highlights the long-standing, complex rift between Panettiere and her mother, a dynamic the late actress addressed in her recent memoir and public appearances.
A Complicated Mother and Daughter Relationship
Panettiere detailed how their relationship deteriorated after she decided to remove Vogel as her manager at age 19. This move transitioned their dynamic from a professional partnership to an estranged personal one.
Despite the public friction and years of separation, Panettiere had expressed in past interviews that she kept the possibility of a future reconciliation open.
King's blunt assessment has resonated broadly across public commentary, shifting the narrative surrounding Panettiere's death toward the broader issues of Hollywood family dynamics and accountability.
Rather than letting the narrative linger on blame and past grievances, broadcast journalists and industry peers have called for greater respect for Panettiere's memory. As fans and former co-stars continue to mourn the loss of the young star, King's candid remarks serve as a poignant reminder of the enduring pain caused by fractured family ties during times of public tragedy.
