For a game that has been more than a decade in the making, Grand Theft Auto 6 was always expected to dominate headlines. But instead of focusing solely on its record-breaking price tag, new characters and blockbuster launch, many fans have found themselves talking about something far more unexpected.
The biggest question now is whether some players will have to buy the game twice. The concern emerged after Rockstar confirmed that the launch 'physical' edition would include only a download code rather than a game disc, before later comments from Rockstar support hinted that a proper physical copy could arrive months after release.
The Physical Edition That Has No Disc
Rockstar says GTA 6 will launch on 19 November for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. The standard edition will cost £69.99 in the UK, while the Ultimate Edition will be priced at £89.99.
However, many players were caught off guard when Rockstar revealed that the physical version would not include a disc. Instead, buyers will receive a box containing a code used to download the game digitally.
Concerns Over A Second Purchase
The backlash intensified after Rockstar support reportedly told customers that a physical copy would be available 'during the following months'. For collectors, that wording raised an obvious concern.
Someone who wants to play at launch may buy the code-in-box edition in November, only to discover that a proper disc version becomes available later. In other words, some fans fear they could end up paying for one version to play immediately and another version to own permanently.
The Confusing Message From Rockstar
Rockstar referred to a future 'physical copy' in its response to customers, but stopped short of confirming whether that version would actually include a game disc. The company also did not clarify whether the release would happen before the game's launch or sometime afterwards.
That lack of detail has only added to the confusion. Without a clear explanation from Rockstar, players have been left trying to work out exactly what the company means and whether a proper disc edition is really on the way.
The Insider Claim That Added Fuel To The Fire
The situation became even murkier when Polish outlet PPE.pl reported that a genuine disc edition could arrive in December 2026, shortly after launch. The claim was linked to insider Graczdari, who had previously reported that GTA 6 would launch without a disc.
At the time, many dismissed that rumour, but Rockstar later confirmed the disc-less launch plan. That earlier accuracy has led some fans to wonder whether the latest claim could also be true, though it remains unconfirmed.
Rockstar's Bigger Strategy
Not everyone believes the decision is a mistake. Games journalist Vic Hood said the £69.99 price tag was 'fairly reasonable' for a major release, though she acknowledged that the lack of a disc could frustrate collectors.
She also noted that a digital-first approach may help Rockstar reduce resales and prevent leaks before launch. Business analysts have largely focused on the pricing strategy, arguing that Rockstar is trying to appeal to both casual players and dedicated fans willing to spend more on premium editions.
The Issue That Still Concerns Fans
GTA 6 is already expected to be one of the biggest entertainment launches in history. GTA 5 sold nearly 230 million copies, and its sequel introduces the series' first playable female protagonist in a 3D setting, Lucia, alongside Jason.
Yet for all the excitement surrounding the game itself, the conversation has shifted to ownership. Fans are not just asking how much GTA 6 costs. They are asking what exactly they are buying.
