Jennifer Garner has reflected on how her acting career slowed dramatically during and after her divorce from Ben Affleck, revealing that she 'hardly worked' for a long stretch as she prioritised raising her children and navigating a period of major personal upheaval.

The actor, best known for Alias and Marvel's Elektra, said the combination of early motherhood and family instability meant her professional life naturally took a backseat for several years.

Career Slowdown During Motherhood And Divorce

Garner and Affleck married in 2005 after meeting on the set of Daredevil and went on to welcome three children: Violet, Fin, and Samuel.

Their separation was announced in June 2015, just one day after their 10th wedding anniversary, with their divorce finalised in 2018.

Reflecting on that period, Garner said: 'First of all, when you're in a performance kind of role, you give up a year, year and a half of performance while you are pregnant, having a baby, recovering.'

She added that during her children's early years, her workload was significantly reduced, explaining: 'When my kids were little, I worked so little, and then we had such an upheaval in our family, that I really hardly worked for a long time.'

Her comments underline how both motherhood and the breakdown of her marriage contributed to an extended step back from consistent acting work.

Family Priorities Overshadowed Hollywood Demands

Garner's reflections highlight the reality many actors face when balancing demanding production schedules with parenting responsibilities.

With three young children at the time, she prioritised stability at home during a period of emotional and logistical change.

While she did not step away from acting entirely, she became far more selective about projects, choosing roles that fit around family commitments rather than maintaining the pace of earlier years.

Industry observers note that such pauses are common in Hollywood careers, particularly for actors navigating early parenthood alongside major life transitions.

Supporting Affleck Through Personal Struggles

Despite their separation, Garner has remained closely involved in Affleck's life, particularly in relation to his ongoing struggles with alcohol addiction.

Affleck has undergone multiple periods of treatment over the years, including rehab stints beginning in the early 2000s.

In 2018, Garner was reported to have personally driven him to a rehabilitation facility in Malibu following an intervention involving a sober coach at his home in California.

At the time, sources said: 'What Jen ultimately cares about is his sobriety and whether she can rely on him to co-parent.'

Co-Parenting And Ongoing Family Ties

Garner and Affleck continue to share three children, Violet, Fin, and Samuel, and have maintained what has widely been described as a cooperative co-parenting relationship.

Even after their divorce was finalised in 2018, the pair have remained publicly committed to supporting their children through adolescence and early adulthood.

Reports have frequently highlighted Garner's role as a stabilising presence during periods of personal difficulty within the family, reinforcing her focus on maintaining consistency for their children.

Balancing Privacy, Fame, And Public Scrutiny

Following the separation, Garner remained in the public eye due to sustained interest in her personal life and her ongoing connection to Affleck.

She has often been portrayed as a steadying influence during turbulent periods in his life, though this narrative has also raised questions about boundaries and personal space.

Despite the attention, Garner has largely avoided public commentary on her private relationships, instead focusing interviews on work, parenting and personal growth.

A Career Shaped By Different Life Phases

Garner's remarks reflect a broader reality in Hollywood, where long-term careers are often shaped by fluctuating phases of activity rather than consistent output.

Her reduced workload during the years surrounding her divorce was not framed as a permanent step away from acting, but rather as a natural consequence of parenting young children and managing personal change.

As her children have grown older, she has gradually returned to more consistent work, taking on selective roles aligned with her current priorities.

Beyond The Headline

Garner's admission that she 'hardly worked' for years offers a candid look at how even established actors can experience extended career slowdowns driven by personal circumstances.

Her experience highlights a familiar pattern in the entertainment industry: professional visibility often shifts in response to major life events, particularly motherhood and family restructuring.

In her case, stepping back from Hollywood was less about withdrawal and more about recalibration, balancing work, parenting and personal stability during a period of significant change.
