Julie Bishop drew attention at the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, 3 November, after arriving in a head-to-toe floral outfit that prompted criticism over her race-day styling. The former Australian politician wore a full-length, short-sleeved button-up dress with a voluminous silhouette, paired with a matching Lady Dior handbag.
She completed the look with a straw boater hat, bringing together several statement pieces for the annual racing event. However, the extensive use of floral prints across her clothing and handbag led to the ensemble being described as 'slightly overwhelming' in coverage of her appearance.
What Bishop Wore to the Melbourne Cup
Bishop chose a full-length, short-sleeved, button-up dress in an all-over floral print. The garment featured a full skirt that gave it a voluminous shape.
She carried a Lady Dior handbag in a matching floral design. The accessory was reportedly valued at $12,000 (£8,950). A straw boater hat completed the outfit, adding a different texture without introducing another prominent print.

Online Reaction to the Look
The ensemble quickly became a talking point. Some online commenters questioned the overall styling, including her choice of accessories and footwear. Others focused on the decision to carry the same floral pattern from the dress to the handbag. Coverage described the look as 'slightly overwhelming' and a rare fashion misstep, with criticism focused solely on styling.
I thought she was off to a children's Easter party😂

The response reflected differing views on matching prints in occasion wear, particularly when several prominent items share the same design. Some questioned whether the repeated pattern created a cohesive statement or looked too busy.
Fashion at the Melbourne Cup
The Melbourne Cup is one of Australia's biggest annual horse-racing events, run on the first Tuesday of November at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne. Known as 'the race that stops a nation', it is a public holiday across much of Victoria and draws a large national audience.
Fashion is a central part of the day. Alongside the racing, attendees' outfits are routinely featured in media coverage, with particular attention paid to dresses, hats and accessories. Coordinated looks are common, with hats and handbags often chosen to complement an outfit. Statement silhouettes, distinctive prints and designer accessories also feature regularly in race-day style reports. Bishop's appearance included several of these elements: a bold print, a voluminous silhouette, a luxury handbag and a traditional race-day hat.
