Stylists are usually the ones working just out of frame. However, Law Roach put himself in the spotlight, declaring himself the Zendaya of his industry and the Serena Williams of styling during an interview meant to smooth over a seating mix-up. This was ironic to everyone watching because the person whose job is to make a global superstar look effortless just claimed he deserves the same level of recognition as her.

Roach made the comparison on Radio Andy's Bevelations with Bevy Smith, responding to accusations that he sees himself as the talent rather than just the person dressing the talent. His response confirmed what many critics thought: the seating issue was not the main problem. The real issue was how easily he compared himself to two of the world's most famous women.

Comparing Himself to Zendaya

Zendaya didn't just wear the outfits chosen by the Image Architect, Law Roach. She provided him with a platform and helped elevate his career. So, when Roach claims to be her equal, many critics view this not as a show of confidence but rather as a surprising display of ingratitude. The general opinion online is that one should not compare themselves to the client whose fame has contributed to their own success.

The Serena Williams line has not been well received either. While Roach may have meant to honour excellence in his field, others saw it as bragging. Critics think comparing his outfit choices to those of one of the greatest athletes feels like an exaggeration. Instead of being groundbreaking, it seems designed to create a buzz.

Attaching Himself to an Icon

Roach also revealed he had finally purchased the late André Leon Talley's custom Christian Dior Haute Couture coat. This acquisition is a tribute to Talley, but critics have framed it as a strategic move to align himself with the legacy of a prominent figure at a moment when he was already facing backlash for his behaviour. Unfortunately, the optics of this situation have not worked in his favor.

Roach's supporters highlight his various accomplishments, including Celine Dion's stunning comeback and Anya Taylor-Joy's standout looks during award season. However, critics believe these examples are exceptions and don't reflect a larger trend. They argue that Zendaya is the only client who has really made Roach famous, and no amount of name-dropping can change that opinion.

Saying the Quiet Part Out Loud

Industry insiders have long whispered that certain stylists see themselves as equal to their clients rather than in their service. Roach simply confirmed it on the record, and critics have not let him forget it.

The sharpest jab came from those defending Zendaya rather than attacking him directly. Several commenters argued Roach only gets away with these comparisons because Zendaya looks flawless in almost anything he puts her in, while his other clients have not always fared so well.

A Dior coat can buy you a piece of history, but it cannot buy you grace. In trying to drape himself in André Leon Talley's legacy while demanding Zendaya's spotlight, Roach succeeded only in highlighting his own insecurity. Truly legendary figures do not have to scream their credentials into a Radio Andy microphone to be seen, they just wear the coat.
