Tom Holland has admitted that even being one of Hollywood's biggest stars was not enough to land a dinner date with Erling Haaland. The Spider-Man actor revealed the Manchester City striker ignored a direct message inviting him to hang out after the pair crossed paths at the Monaco Grand Prix, describing the awkward moment as a 'humbling' reminder that fame does not always guarantee a response.

Instead of feeling offended, Holland laughed off the incident while appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The actor even praised Haaland as 'an absolute legend', proving there were no hard feelings despite the footballer's unanswered message, which later became one of the internet's most talked-about celebrity ghosting stories.

Tom Holland Confirmed the DM

Holland finally addressed the viral story during his appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where host Jimmy Fallon asked whether reports about the unanswered message were actually true.

The actor confirmed he had messaged Haaland after spotting him in Monaco and joked that the silence was a valuable lesson. Holland laughed that he expected at least some sort of reply, but instead received 'nada', calling it exactly the kind of humbling experience every actor needs.

After Spotting Haaland

Holland explained that everything started during the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix earlier this summer. While watching Lewis Hamilton race, the lifelong football fan noticed Haaland sitting in a hospitality suite across from him.

Rather than letting the opportunity pass, he decided to take a chance and send the Manchester City striker a message. Looking back, Holland admitted he never expected the private exchange to become a talking point on national television. 'I just thought I'd shoot my shot', he said with a smile, adding that sharing the story publicly was never part of the plan.

Haaland Mistook Holland for a Stranger

Speaking on the Norwegian programme A Laget, the striker admitted he ignored the invitation because he simply had no idea who had contacted him. Haaland explained that he rarely watches films and did not recognise Holland's name when the message appeared on his phone. 'I don't watch movies much, so I have no idea who people are', he admitted.

Thinking the message had come from a complete stranger, the footballer chose not to respond. Only afterwards did he discover that the sender was actually the actor best known for playing Spider-Man. Realising the mix-up, Haaland laughed at himself and admitted he had completely forgotten about the message, adding that he probably owed Holland a reply.

There Were Clearly No Hard Feelings

Despite the awkward exchange, Holland made it clear there is no resentment between them. Instead, he praised Haaland as one of football's biggest talents and described him as 'incredible' and 'an absolute legend'. The conversation also turned to England's recent victory over Norway, which knocked Haaland's side out of the competition.

When Fallon joked the striker was probably still hurting after the defeat, Holland responded with sympathy, saying, 'A little bit, bless him'. Interestingly, Haaland has also admitted he wants England to do well despite the result, revealing he even owned an England shirt before getting a Norway one as a child.

Holland also said that the encounter was 'exactly the kind of humbling experience that's important for actors,' much to the amusement and admiration of his fans.

Tom Has Plenty To Look Forward To

He is preparing for the release of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, where he stars alongside Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o and Charlize Theron. Holland plays Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, in the epic adaptation of Homer's classic tale.

The actor will also return as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which continues the story after Spider-Man: No Way Home. The film reunites him with Zendaya and Jacob Batalon while adding several new faces to the Marvel franchise.

The Story Behind the Unanswered DM

For many celebrities, being ignored might be embarrassing enough to keep private. Holland did the opposite. By openly laughing at himself, he turned an awkward celebrity moment into an entertaining story that audiences could relate to.

Whether you are a Hollywood star or an ordinary person, sending a message and waiting for a reply is something almost everyone understands.

As for Haaland, it seems the footballer simply mistook one of the world's most recognisable actors for a stranger. And if his promise to finally message back becomes reality, the dinner that never happened might still be back on the table.
