Lenny Kravitz has finally explained the surprising reason behind one of his most talked about habits. The 62-year-old rocker revealed that he does not rely on a smartwatch or fitness tracker to keep tabs on his health. Instead, he uses his signature 28-inch leather trousers as his own fitness gauge.
According to Kravitz, if his favourite leather pants start feeling tight, he knows it is time to get back on track with his routine. The unusual method has become his personal way of measuring his fitness, proving that, as he puts it, 'the pants don't lie'.
His Reason for Wearing Leather
While many fans assumed his leather gym outfits were simply for attention, Kravitz insisted there is a practical reason behind them. The 'Fly Away' singer explained that he often performs, records and travels throughout the day, making it easier to work out without stopping to change clothes.
'I perform onstage in leather, denim, whatever, so those are the pants I wear to train', he explained. 'It also means I can fit in a workout anytime, anywhere.' For Kravitz, staying prepared is more important than following traditional gym fashion.
Leather Pants Track His Fitness
Kravitz shared the unusual fitness trick during a new interview with Men's Health, revealing that he judges his physical condition by how comfortably he fits into his famous leather trousers. 'I can gauge everything by how I'm in my pants', he said. 'If my pants are a little tight, I know I'm getting outta' shape.'
Rather than checking daily step counts or calorie burn on wearable devices, the singer prefers a much simpler approach. His long-time friend Denzel Washington even gave him the phrase that has now become part of his fitness mindset. 'The pants don't lie, the pants don't lie', Kravitz recalled.
He Makes One Exception
Despite becoming famous for lifting weights in leather trousers and boots, Kravitz admitted he does not wear the outfit for every type of exercise. He previously explained that cardio sessions require a different approach because of the amount of sweat involved.
'If I'm doing cardio, obviously I'm going to wear sweats because I'm going to be sweating all over the place', he said in an earlier interview with Variety. 'But if I'm lifting weights, I don't sweat so much.' That distinction explains why fans usually only see him wearing leather while strength training.
His Viral Gym Video Raised Questions
Kravitz's unusual workout style first became a major talking point in April 2024 after he posted an Instagram video showing himself lifting weights while wearing leather trousers, a mesh top and wraparound sunglasses. The clip quickly spread online, with many viewers questioning whether anyone could seriously train in such an outfit.
Alongside the video, Kravitz encouraged followers to stay committed to their goals. 'Thank God for today! Grateful. Never been better. There are no shortcuts, so seize your day. It is all possible. Love!'
His One Body Insecurity
Even with his famously lean physique, Kravitz admitted he is not completely satisfied with every part of his body. The musician said he is proud of the effort he has put into staying healthy over the years, but believes there is still room for improvement.
'I don't mean that to sound like I'm into myself, but I've put in the work', he said. 'I feel really good. But I gotta fill out my legs a little bit.' His comments offered a reminder that even celebrities known for their fitness continue to notice imperfections in themselves.
Years of Training Paid Off
Kravitz rejected claims that his unusual workout style is just for attention, explaining that his routine comes from years of experience and knowing his own body. He credited his trainer and his personal understanding of fitness for helping him stay in shape at 62.
'My trainer knows what he's doing. I know my body and what my body does and what it can do and how it feels and it's all good', he said.
The rocker added that he has trained with elite athletes from the NFL, NBA, MLB, as well as wrestlers and boxers, giving him confidence in his approach. For Kravitz, consistency matters more than appearances, whether he is wearing leather trousers, denim or boots.
