Turns out there is a reason Louis Partridge struggled to name a summer pop song. The actor has built his taste in music around The Cure, Portishead and The Smiths, with a side of vintage jazz and blues from the early 1900s. So, when he told co-star Millie Bobby Brown he needed something 'for you to get your head around', fans are now asking whether that was banter or a flash of music snobbery.

The pair sat down with Popsugar to promote Enola Holmes 3, and what should have been a light 'song of the summer' question has turned into another one of the internet's debates. Those who watched the video thought he sounded condescending, with one viewer saying, 'I don't like his tone'.

What Was Up With That 'Within Her Realm' Comment?

Millie answered instantly that the 'song of the summer' would most definitely be Zara Larsson's 'Midnight Sun'. Louis hesitated, then said, 'You say that like it's obvious', before landing on Audrey Hobert's 'Sue Me', adding that it was probably last summer's song but still 'within Millie's realm'.

That phrase is the one people keep coming back to. Given that Louis's actual reference points are closer to Robert Smith and Siouxsie Sioux than to the pop charts, his hesitation seems like a deliberate decision to steer clear of the mainstream. Funny enough, one of the biggest names currently dominating those charts is his reported ex, Olivia Rodrigo.

Banter Between Old Friends, or a Line Crossed?

Not everyone believes this was more than friendly teasing between people who have known each other for a long time. Millie and Louis have played on-screen siblings since the first Enola Holmes film, and their off-screen dynamic backs that up.

Millie has said that people are surprised to learn that Louis is sharp and thoughtful, and jokes that, around each other, they both regress to their younger selves.

Louis agreed, saying they are often told they come across like an actual brother and sister. Their connection is genuine, yet it prompts an interesting discussion about whether their familiarity gave him licence to sound dismissive on camera.

For some viewers, that context explains the tone entirely. For others, particularly a Gen-Z audience that has grown fluent in spotting subtle condescension in how men talk about women's taste, the joke landed flat.

Why the Internet Is Watching So Closely

Louis and Olivia reportedly split late last year, and he has since been linked to someone new, but neither of them has addressed it publicly, which keeps fans combing through his every interview for clues. A man being cast as sniffy about mainstream pop, while having dated one of the biggest pop stars alive, was never going to slip past unnoticed. Whether Louis meant to sound dismissive or not in his interview with Millie, the timing is pointed.

It does not help that one of the songs on Olivia's latest album is literally titled 'The Cure', even though Rodrigo has said the title has nothing to do with the band. Fans are not letting that go, especially now that Louis's actual taste is public knowledge.
