Meghan Markle returned to the London spotlight on Wednesday, 7 October, meeting Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai for afternoon tea at Claridge's in Mayfair while wearing an outfit estimated at £28,000. The Duchess of Sussex's first public appearance in the capital since moving back to Britain featured several American fashion labels, including one rooted in her native Los Angeles.

The 45-year-old former Suits actress and Yousafzai, 29, were photographed chatting inside the luxury hotel's Foyer & Reading Room before embracing as they said goodbye. Their reunion comes six years after the two women joined forces to champion girls' education, with Meghan now navigating life between Britain and California.

How Meghan's London Outfit Reached £28,000

For the afternoon outing, Meghan chose a neutral ensemble combining American and British designers. She wore wide-legged white satin trousers from Ralph Lauren, priced at approximately £1,700, alongside a light taupe cashmere jumper identified as a CO design, costing around £630. A camel-coloured coat from London-based TOVE Studio, valued at £1,695, completed the layered look.

Her accessories accounted for most of the estimated £28,000 total. Meghan carried a black Chanel handbag worth approximately £7,000 and wore Saint Laurent loafers priced at around £795. The most expensive piece was her Logan Hollowell 'Lovers Duet' diamond and emerald chain necklace, valued at approximately £16,200.

The necklace alone represented more than half the outfit's estimated retail value. Meghan had previously worn the jewellery during public appearances earlier in 2026, meaning the figure does not represent confirmed spending on new purchases. She also carried a canvas tote decorated with illustrations of women wearing hijabs, adding another distinctive element to her otherwise neutral wardrobe.

The California Connection in Her London Wardrobe

Although Meghan was attending a traditional British afternoon tea, several elements of her outfit traced back to California. CO, the label behind her cashmere jumper, was founded in 2011 by Stephanie Danan and Justin Kern in Los Angeles, with its beginnings traced to a house in the Hollywood Hills. Her Logan Hollowell necklace also came from a jewellery brand established in Los Angeles, while Ralph Lauren remains one of America's most recognisable fashion houses.

Her white satin trousers also challenged an old American fashion convention discouraging white clothing after Labour Day in September. The guideline has never been a formal dress code, but Meghan's October outfit contrasted with the darker colours commonly associated with autumn dressing. There is no confirmation that she intended to make a statement about the tradition.

The British connection came through TOVE, founded in 2019 by Camille Perry and Holly Wright. The London womenswear label specialises in refined silhouettes and pieces designed to work across seasons. Meghan's choice combined its camel outerwear with American knitwear and tailoring, bringing both sides of her transatlantic wardrobe into one outfit.

Meghan and Malala's Friendship Goes Back Six Years

Their meeting at Claridge's was a personal catch-up rather than an announced royal engagement. Meghan and Prince Harry previously joined Yousafzai in a virtual conversation marking International Day of the Girl on 11 October 2020. During the discussion, Meghan spoke about the importance of giving women a voice in decisions affecting their communities, arguing that change happens 'when women have a seat at the table'.

Yousafzai, who became the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 2014, later reflected on their shared commitment. 'Meghan and I are on the same page: we both believe that when girls have access to education, everyone wins,' she wrote following their conversation. Her Malala Fund continues campaigning for girls' access to education worldwide.

The latest reunion follows Meghan and Prince Harry's return to Britain with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, in August 2026. The family has established a home in the Cotswolds while maintaining its residence in Montecito, California. Meghan's afternoon with Yousafzai offered a glimpse of her renewed social life in Britain, with an outfit that connected her American roots to her new surroundings.
