Melissa Barrera's Hollywood career has faced another troubling spotlight after director Colin Minihan claimed producers stopped him from casting the actress in several independent films. The filmmaker made the claim on X on August 8, saying he had tried to hire Barrera 'multiple times' but was blocked by producers.
The new allegation adds to Barrera's own claims that she has been shut out of parts of Hollywood since her controversial exit from Scream 7. While Minihan's comments offer a new account from a director, there is no public evidence showing which films or producers were involved.
Colin Minihan Claims Producers Blocked Barrera
The latest claim came after an X user asked Minihan if he had recently tried to cast Barrera. The director replied, 'yep. tried to cast her. producers wouldn't let me,' before adding that it happened 'multiple times' on 'several indies'.
Melissa Barrera confirms she was officially blacklisted from Hollywood but says she’s okay with the consequences because it’s important to call things as they are but says she has hope because more people in industry no longer care and are speaking out as well. ❤️ pic.twitter.com/vdqb9WeAbC

Minihan did not name the films, producers or companies involved in the posts. Because of that, his comments should be treated as an allegation rather than proof of a wider Hollywood blacklist.

The director's statement has still drawn fresh attention because it lines up with concerns Barrera has raised about her career. The claim also comes months after Barrera spoke openly about losing work following her removal from the Scream franchise.
Why Melissa Barrera Was Removed From Scream 7
Barrera was removed from Scream 7 in November 2023 after she made social media posts about the Israel-Gaza conflict. Spyglass Media Group, the company behind the film, said her posts crossed its policy on antisemitism and hate speech.
The company said it had 'zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form'. Barrera, however, has rejected the idea that her comments were antisemitic and has said she was speaking about the suffering of Palestinians and calling for peace.
Her firing became one of the biggest Hollywood controversies surrounding the Scream franchise. Barrera had played Sam Carpenter in Scream and Scream VI, making her removal a major change for the planned direction of the series.
Barrera Has Spoken About Being 'Blacklisted'
In a May 2026 interview with Variety, Barrera said the fallout from her Scream firing had left her blocked from some parts of the industry. She said she had gone through a period when acting offers became quiet and described herself as the 'perfect scapegoat'.
Barrera has also made clear that she does not see the end of her Scream role as the end of her career. She has since moved into new work, including Broadway's Titanique, while also developing projects of her own.
The actress is now working on building her own path instead of waiting for major studios to decide where she belongs. In her Variety interview, she said she was focused on producing, finding good companies to work with and creating opportunities for people who supported her.
What Minihan's Claim Could Mean
Minihan's comments are important because they suggest that Barrera's career problems may have reached beyond the major studio that removed her from Scream 7. If his account is accurate, producers on smaller independent projects also made decisions that kept her from being cast.
However, the claim has not been independently confirmed, and Minihan has not identified the projects or producers involved. It would therefore be misleading to state as fact that Hollywood has a formal blacklist against Barrera.
The new allegation does give fresh weight to a debate that has followed Barrera since 2023. As the actress continues taking on stage and screen work, the question now is whether more filmmakers will speak publicly about the barriers they say they faced when trying to work with her.
