Michael Jackson’s iconic ‘Thriller’ jacket could fetch over $10 million at auction Michael Jackson/Youtube

Michael Jackson's iconic red-and-black leather jacket from the 1983 music video for 'Thriller' is expected to return to auction in December, with Julien's Auctions predicting that the legendary piece of pop culture memorabilia could sell for more than $10 million (£7.5 million). The jacket will headline the Michael Jackson: The Fashion Legacy Evening Auction on 7 December 2026 at Rosewood Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

Julien's Auctions says the event will feature several items associated with defining moments in the late singer's career, including the rhinestone-studded glove he wore during his famous performance at Motown 25 and footwear connected to his signature dance moves. The upcoming sale will bring four significant pieces of Jackson memorabilia back to the market, giving collectors a chance to acquire items linked to his music, stage performances and distinctive fashion.

'Thriller' Jacket Returns to Auction

The black and candy-red leather jacket was worn by Jackson in the music video for 'Thriller', released in 1983. The production became one of the most influential music videos of its era, combining music, choreography and horror-inspired storytelling.

Designed by Deborah Nadoolman Landis, the jacket features exaggerated shoulders, silver buckles at the cuffs, a red silk lining and a distinctive V-shaped silhouette. Its design became closely associated with Jackson's appearance during the 'Thriller' era and inspired countless imitations.

Only two jackets were made for the production. The one being offered at auction is the version Jackson wore during scenes in which he did not appear in zombie makeup. The second jacket was deliberately distressed for the zombie sequences and is held by the Michael Jackson estate, with the garment displayed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The jacket offered for sale also carries personal inscriptions from Jackson. According to the auction house, the inside lining reads, 'To Bush and Dennis All My Love Michael Jackson', while the sleeve is signed, 'Love Michael Jackson'. The inscriptions reflect the garment's connection to Michael Bush and Dennis Tompkins, the costume designers who worked with Jackson for many years and helped create versions of his stage outfits.

Why the Jacket Could Reach $10 Million

The jacket previously sold for $1.8 million (£1.3 million) at a Julien's Auctions sale in 2011. Its return to the auction market comes with much higher expectations, although the auction house has not published a formal estimate and says the price guidance is available upon request.

Martin Nolan, co-founder and executive director of Julien's Auctions, said the jacket could fetch more than $10 million, pointing to its cultural significance and the continued interest in Jackson among younger audiences. The projected figure would represent a substantial increase on its previous sale price. However, the final amount will depend on bidding when the item goes under the hammer.

Jackson's 'Thriller' jacket is among the most recognisable garments associated with the singer. The music video helped establish a visual identity that extended beyond the song itself, with its red-and-black outfit becoming an enduring reference point in music and fashion.

The upcoming auction also reflects the ongoing market for memorabilia associated with major moments in entertainment history. Items worn by performers during landmark concerts, music videos and film productions can attract international collectors because of their direct connection to influential cultural events.
