Miley Cyrus appears to be leaving more than just an old musical era behind. The singer has dropped her famous surname from her latest branding, presenting herself simply as 'Miley' as she prepares for what is expected to be her 10th studio album.
The timing is particularly intriguing because 'Cyrus' is not just a surname for the pop star. It is the name that links her to her famous father, country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, and to the family history that has played such a visible role in her life and career. Yet, despite the obvious family connection, there is currently no evidence that Miley's rebrand is a new snub aimed at her dad. In fact, the pair have spent the past two years moving towards reconciliation after a lengthy period of estrangement.
Why Miley Is Going Solo
The change emerged on 31 August, when Miley began presenting herself professionally simply as 'Miley', including through new visual branding connected with her upcoming music. Reports say her website and social media presentation have shifted towards the mononymous identity, although her official website still identifies her as Miley Cyrus and there is no evidence that she has legally changed her name.
That distinction matters. This currently appears to be a professional rebrand, rather than proof that the singer has legally abandoned the Cyrus name.
The move nevertheless feels significant for an artist who has repeatedly reinvented herself. From Disney's Hannah Montana to her provocative Bangerz era and the more reflective Something Beautiful, Miley has built a career around changing her image while remaining instantly recognisable.
Now, she appears ready to make 'Miley' the entire statement.
Is Billy Ray Cyrus Behind the Move?
Naturally, the decision has raised questions about Billy Ray.
The singer's surname has been part of Miley's identity since childhood, when she rose to fame alongside her father on Hannah Montana. Billy Ray played her on-screen father, while their real-life relationship became part of the public fascination surrounding the Disney phenomenon.
Their relationship later became strained, particularly following the breakdown of Billy Ray's marriage to Miley's mother, Tish Cyrus, in 2022. Miley and her father were reportedly estranged for years before beginning to repair their relationship in 2025.
By March 2026, the pair had reunited publicly for the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special. Miley spoke openly about how meaningful it was to have her father involved, saying it felt good when the Cyruses were getting along.
That makes the timing of the surname change especially interesting. It would be tempting to interpret the move as another chapter in their family drama, but there is no evidence that Miley has said this is about Billy Ray.
Miley Considered Dropping 'Cyrus' Before
The idea is not entirely new.
Back in 2013, Miley told Notion magazine that she had considered dropping the surname and being known simply as Miley. At the time, however, she decided there was power in having a surname that had become a household name.
More than a decade later, she appears to have reached a different conclusion.
The change could be less about rejecting her family and more about finally feeling comfortable enough with her own identity to stand without the name that helped launch her career.
A New Album, a New Record Label
The rebrand also arrives at a major professional turning point.
Miley signed with Atlantic Records in July 2026 after a decade-long relationship with Sony Music, marking another significant change ahead of her next project.
Her upcoming record is expected to become her 10th studio album, following Something Beautiful, which was released in May 2025. She has described the new project as a layered love story reflecting her personal growth and relationships.
The album's title and release date have not yet been formally announced, leaving fans to speculate about exactly what this new 'Miley' era will look and sound like.
A Personal New Chapter
There is another emotional layer to the timing. Miley is also navigating the recent death of her godmother, Dolly Parton, who died on 25 August 2026 at the age of 80. Miley described Parton's loss as deeply personal and paid tribute to the woman who had been a major influence throughout her life.
So while the disappearance of 'Cyrus' may look like a dramatic family statement, the bigger picture appears more complicated.
Miley is entering a period defined by reconciliation, loss, reinvention and new music. Whether the surname eventually returns remains unclear, but for now, the message is remarkably simple: this chapter belongs to Miley.
