Pat McGrath Labs, the luxury beauty brand founded by British makeup artist Dame Patricia Ann McGrath, DBE – Makeup Artist, Founder, CEO, Creative Director, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States. The move abruptly cancels a planned asset sale and marks a dramatic downturn for the company, once valued at over £800 million.
Pat McGrath, hailed by Vogue as 'the most influential makeup artist in the world', has collaborated with Alexander McQueen, Dior, Louis Vuitton, and other top-tier designers. In 2025, she was appointed Creative Director of Makeup for La Beauté Louis Vuitton, reinforcing her global influence in fashion and beauty.
The Chapter 11 filing, submitted on 22 January in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida, halts an imminent auction of the company's assets, which had been scheduled for late January after a secured lender initiated a distressed sale process. Court filings indicate the proceedings will now move into a court‑supervised restructuring, aimed at stabilising the business rather than liquidating it outright.
In legal documents accompanying the petition, the company requested emergency funding to cover critical operating costs, including employee wages and payments to key suppliers. The filings highlight the liquidity pressures that prompted the bankruptcy, following months of financial strain and reliance on short-term financing.
From Runway Darling to Billion-Dollar Brand
Pat McGrath Labs launched in October 2015 with an innovative direct-to-consumer model. Its first product, Gold 001, a £30 multipurpose pigment encased in sequins, sold out its 1,000‑unit run within minutes, establishing a pattern of exclusive product drops that turned McGrath's editorial and runway artistry into commercial success.
The brand's ascent was meteoric. In 2018, French private equity firm Eurazeo Brands invested £48 million ($60 million), valuing the company at more than £800 million ($1 billion) and making Pat McGrath Labs one of the rare beauty 'unicorns' – startups valued at over $1 billion.
This milestone briefly positioned McGrath as the world's richest makeup artist, celebrated for turning decades of editorial and runway influence into a global cosmetics powerhouse.
The Downturn: When Beauty Meets Financial Reality
Over the past few years, Pat McGrath Labs faced growing challenges. Shifts in consumer preferences toward skincare and minimalist aesthetics made it difficult for the brand's maximalist makeup ethos to maintain mass appeal.
Retail placements contracted, leadership changed, and investor interest declined. Eurazeo quietly exited in 2021, and later backers significantly marked down their stakes. By 2024, one investor's share had dropped by 88 per cent, implying a total company valuation of around £140 million ($174 million).
Chapter 11: A Strategic Pause
Chapter 11 bankruptcy allows a company to restructure its debts while continuing operations. Unlike Chapter 7, which results in liquidation, Chapter 11 provides breathing room to renegotiate contracts, restructure obligations, and pursue new investment under court supervision.
For Pat McGrath Labs, the filing halts the previously announced asset auction, which could have sold trademarks, logos, and other intellectual property to the highest bidder.
In a statement, the company said: 'During this process, the company will continue operations in the ordinary course of business while working to restructure its balance sheet and to forge a path to thrive.' It reaffirmed its commitment to customers, partners, and stakeholders while maintaining its signature products and creative vision.
Financial Strain Behind the Glamour
Industry insiders estimate the brand generated roughly £40 million ($50 million) in revenue in 2025 – a respectable figure, but below the level needed to support prior operational expectations and investor returns.
Its prestige colour cosmetics remain available through retailers including Sephora, Ulta, and Nordstrom, ensuring McGrath's signature aesthetic continues to reach beauty enthusiasts worldwide.

Looking Ahead: Uncertainty and Opportunity
While the future of Pat McGrath Labs remains uncertain, the Chapter 11 filing presents both risk and potential. Analysts suggest that a successful restructuring could preserve the brand's creative vision and open the door for strategic partnerships or new investment.
At the same time, the bankruptcy underscores the challenges luxury beauty brands face in an evolving market shaped by changing consumer tastes and economic pressures.
As the restructuring process unfolds in the coming months, stakeholders and beauty fans alike will be watching closely to see whether Pat McGrath Labs can regain its footing or if new ownership will steer the brand in a different direction – a high-stakes chapter in the story of one of the most influential figures in modern cosmetics.
