Prince Harry once said he could not see a world in which he would bring Meghan and their children back to Britain without police protection. Now, just over a year after describing their return as impossible, the Sussex family are reportedly preparing to move back to the UK, putting his long-running security concerns firmly into everyday family life.
Harry, Meghan and their children, Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, are expected to relocate later this month to a private residence outside London. The children are also reportedly enrolled in British schools for September, suggesting this is far more than another short visit for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Harry's Security Warning
The move marks a striking turn in Harry's position on security. After losing his legal challenge over his UK protection arrangements in May 2025, he told the BBC that he could not see a world in which he would bring his wife and children back to Britain at that point.
Harry had argued that his family needed adequate protection when in the UK, saying the security dispute had always been the sticking point. He also made clear that he wanted the experts, rather than his father King Charles, to determine the arrangements, keeping the issue separate from his wider family relationship.
The Family Is Now Returning
Despite those concerns, Harry and Meghan are now reportedly preparing to make Britain part of their family life again. Their exact home has not been disclosed, but it is understood to be a non-royal property outside London, keeping them away from the official royal household while placing them within easier reach of family and British institutions.
Their reported decision to enrol Archie and Lilibet in British schools gives the move particular weight. Schooling requires routine, stability and a regular presence, making the children's return one of the clearest signs that the Sussexes are considering a sustained UK base.
Charles Told About the Move
King Charles was reportedly informed of the relocation plans on Sunday, although the decision was not raised during the family's meeting at Highgrove last month. That detail suggests the reunion may have helped rebuild personal contact without necessarily being part of a formal agreement over the Sussexes' return.
The King is said to welcome seeing more of his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren in a private capacity. However, there is no indication that Harry and Meghan will regain working royal roles, meaning their return will not amount to a restoration of their former position within the monarchy.
Their July Reunion Changed the Picture
The reported move follows a significant family reunion at Highgrove in Gloucestershire. Harry, Meghan and their children spent time with Charles and Queen Camilla, marking the first time in four years that the King had seen the whole Sussex family together.
Harry has also spoken openly about wanting reconciliation with his family. After his security case, he said he had forgiven his relatives and wanted to stop fighting, adding that life was precious and he wanted the opportunity to repair damaged relationships.
Harry Faces a New Security Reality
The Sussexes are expected to keep their properties in Montecito, California, and Portugal, so the British move does not necessarily mean they are abandoning their international lifestyle. Instead, Britain could become a family base while their existing overseas homes remain part of their wider life.
But Harry's security concerns will now face their most practical test. The arrangements for the family have not been disclosed, and with Archie and Lilibet reportedly starting school in Britain, questions over protection, privacy and public exposure are likely to become much harder to keep at a distance.
For Harry, the return therefore carries a striking irony. The security issue he once described as the barrier to bringing his family home is no longer simply a courtroom battle or a matter of principle. If the reported move goes ahead, it will become part of the family's daily reality in Britain.
