Princess Diana's greatest legacy was not only changing the Royal Family but redefining royal parenting. Nearly 30 years after her death, Princes William and Harry continue to honour her by raising their children with compassion, empathy and as much normality as royal life allows.
Princess Diana would have celebrated her 65th birthday on 1 July, and while she never had the chance to meet her grandchildren, her influence remains deeply woven into their lives through the parenting choices of Prince William and Prince Harry.
Remembered as the 'People's Princess', Diana transformed expectations of royal motherhood by putting her children before protocol. She wanted William and Harry to understand life beyond palace walls, believing that kindness, empathy and emotional openness were just as important as duty. Today, both brothers have spoken about carrying those same values into their own families, ensuring that Diana's approach to parenting lives on in a new generation.
Diana Believed Empathy Was Life's Greatest Lesson
Long before conversations around children's mental health became commonplace, Diana was determined that her sons would experience the realities of everyday life.
In her landmark 1995 BBC Panorama interview, the late Princess of Wales revealed that she deliberately took William and Harry to hospitals, homeless shelters and communities facing hardship so they could better understand the challenges many people live with every day.
'I took William and Harry to homeless shelters. I took them to hospitals. I took them to all sorts of areas where I'm not sure any of that age in this family has been before,' she said.
Diana believed those experiences would shape the men they would eventually become.
'They may never use it, but the seed is there, and I hope it will grow because knowledge is power,' she added.
That philosophy has remained a defining influence on both princes.
William Is Raising His Children With Compassion and Stability
Prince William has often credited his mother with giving him the emotional foundation he still relies on today.
Speaking in the 2017 documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, he said: 'She gave us the right tools and had prepared us well for life in the best way she could.'
Now raising Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis with the Princess of Wales, William has adopted many of Diana's parenting principles by prioritising family life over royal formality whenever possible.
School runs, sports days, playdates and family time have become regular features of life for the Wales family, reflecting William's determination to give his children as grounded an upbringing as possible.
Speaking on Apple TV+'s The Reluctant Traveller, he explained: 'Everything is about the future, and if you don't start the children off now with a happy, healthy, stable home, I feel you're setting them up for a bit of a hard time.'
William has also made sure Diana remains a presence in his children's lives.
Speaking to British GQ in 2017, he admitted: 'I would like to have had her advice. I would love her to have met Catherine and to have seen the children grow up.'
He later revealed that he is 'constantly talking about Granny Diana' so that George, Charlotte and Louis know the grandmother they never had the opportunity to meet.
Diana's lessons are also reflected in William's public work. His long-standing commitment to tackling homelessness, including through his Homewards initiative, traces back to childhood visits to shelters with his mother, who believed public service should always begin with compassion.
Harry Has Embraced Diana's Emotional Openness
Prince Harry has similarly spoken about how his mother's values continue to shape the way he and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, are raising Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
The Duke of Sussex has frequently highlighted the importance of emotional well-being, protecting his children from unnecessary public scrutiny and creating the kind of family life his mother wanted for him.
During an interview on NBC's Today in 2022, Harry said: 'More so now than ever, she's very much helping me.'
In his Apple TV+ series The Me You Can't See, he shared that one of Archie's first words was 'Grandma Diana' after seeing a photograph of her displayed in his nursery.
'I've got a photo up in his nursery. Apart from 'mama' and 'papa', it was then 'Grandma'. Grandma Diana,' Harry recalled, describing the moment as both heartwarming and bittersweet.
Harry has also remembered Diana as a fun and unconventional mother who would take him and William for burgers, sneak them into the cinema and drive through the countryside listening to music, determined to give them moments of ordinary childhood despite extraordinary circumstances.
A Legacy That Lives Beyond Fashion
Princess Diana remains one of the most influential royal style icons of all time, with her famous 'revenge dress', elegant tailoring and relaxed off-duty wardrobe continuing to inspire designers around the world. Yet, as her family marks what would have been her 65th birthday, it is her approach to motherhood that has arguably left the deepest mark.
From keeping 'Granny Diana's' memory alive for their children to raising them with compassion, empathy and a sense of normality, both Prince William and Prince Harry continue to honour the values their mother championed. Nearly three decades after her death, Diana's greatest legacy lives on not only in the history of the monarchy, but in the way its future generations are being raised.
