After nearly two decades of defining reality fashion television, Project Runway is once again threading the needle with Season 22. However, this time, the excitement surrounding its return comes with a noticeable snag in the seams: cautious optimism.

Premiered on 9 July on Freeform, with streaming available on Hulu and Disney+, the long-running competition series continues to serve as a launchpad for emerging fashion designers. Hosted by Heidi Klum and mentored by Season 4 winner Christian Siriano, the show has crafted a legacy that has dressed everyone from Michelle Obama to Lady Gaga. Joining the judging panel this season are Nina Garcia, Law Roach, and Tyra Banks; a lineup that has already sparked a diversity of conversations online.

With 22 contestants, the largest cast in the show's history, Season 22 promises scale. Whether it delivers substance, however, is exactly what fans are questioning.

Can 'Project Runway' Season 22 Make It Work?

For many longtime viewers, Project Runway has been a cultural staple. From Tim Gunn's iconic 'make it work' mantra to the meticulous construction critiques that once defined the judging panel, the show built its reputation on craftsmanship and mentorship.

Recent seasons, however, have left some fans feeling disconnected.

'I hope the season lasts longer than the last one. Too short. Too much editing', one viewer commented online, expressing frustration about pacing and storytelling techniques.

Another critique that continues to surface is the perceived move away from design and toward drama. 'Less drama, more fashion', one fan wrote bluntly, summing up an expectation that most fashionistas share when they settle in to watch a fashion-oriented show.

The Final Collection Problem

Traditionally, the finale has been the moment where designers are given ample time, space, and resources to fully realise their vision. Regardless, many felt that the compressed timeline resulted in underwhelming outcomes in the previous season.

'Does anyone know if the final collection will be pulled together in an extremely short timeframe again?' one viewer asked, adding that the previous season's results were 'such a disappointment'.

Casting, Chemistry, and Controversy

The addition of Tyra Banks to the judging panel has also proven divisive, to say the least.

While some welcome her presence as a pop culture icon, others remain with eyebrows raised higher than high fashion due to her recent controversy tied to the docuseries, Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model.

'We want Tim, not Tyra', one fan wrote, referencing the absence of longtime mentor Tim Gunn, whose departure has left a significant blank space on the show.

Meanwhile, Law Roach's judging style continues to draw mixed reactions, with some praising his boldness and others questioning whether it crosses into harshness without offering constructive feedback.

Nevertheless, it is worth noting that not all responses have been critical. Many fans remain loyal, eager to see new talent emerge regardless of format changes. 'Season 22, I am seated', one viewer wrote, capturing the enduring pull of the series.

Is Project Runway Season 22 In or Out?

Love it or hate it, Project Runway still matters.

The question now is whether Season 22 can manage to modernise the format while honouring the craftsmanship that made the show a success in the first place.

Historically, audiences have primarily tuned in for a show that dishes out fashion, not drama. If this season can refocus on design, elevate its finalists, and connect with its viewers, it might just stitch together the phenomenal comeback fans have been waiting for.

In the iconic words of Heidi Klum: 'In fashion, one day you're in. And the next day, you're out.' With that in mind, will Project Runway Season 22 make it into viewers' watchlists or will they be saying 'auf wiedersehen' to the ratings?
