Academy Award-winning actress Reese Witherspoon has revealed a bizarre real-life legal mix-up. She recalled being chosen as a jury foreperson because her fellow jurors believed she had attended law school after seeing her portray law student Elle Woods in Legally Blonde.
The Big Little Lies star recounted the hilarious anecdote during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show. Witherspoon said the incident occurred roughly seven years after the 2001 comedy, in which she famously played the pink-loving Harvard Law School student.
Jury Duty Blues
Summoned for jury duty in Beverly Hills, Witherspoon said she initially assumed she would be dismissed. Instead, she was selected to serve on a lengthy civil trial that lasted for about two weeks.
The case involved a dispute between a woman and a dog owner after the woman was injured while putting her hand into a fight between dogs. Witherspoon recalled that she and the other jurors were required to attend court every day throughout the trial.
The strangest moment came during the jury's deliberations, when the group needed to choose a foreperson. According to Witherspoon, the other jurors quickly decided that she should take the role. The actress found it odd why her fellow jurors would choose her among the rest.
When she asked why they had singled her out, their explanation left her stunned: they believed she had been to law school.
Clearing the Misconception
Realising that her fictional academic credentials as Elle Woods had apparently blurred with reality, Witherspoon said she immediately corrected the misconception.
'Y'all, this is really upsetting. I definitely did not go to law school, I didn't finish college!' she recalled telling the other jurors.
Witherspoon added that she explained she had simply played a lawyer in a film, but the group made her foreperson anyway. She clarified that her credentials playing Elle Woods was fictional and that she had no law degree.
She said the experience also gave her an unsettling insight into how some people approach jury deliberations. The actress recalled hearing fellow jurors make judgements based on personal impressions rather than the evidence presented during the trial.
Reese Witherspoon says to go to jury duty: "Somebody has to be the foreman and they unanimously, 'Her. You went to law school.' Y'all, this is really upsetting. I started realizing people don't know much about the law. If you get picked, please do it. Some bad stuff goes down in there, y'all."

What Witherspoon Learned From Jury Duty
At one point, Witherspoon remembered a juror expressing an opinion about the defendant based on the way she looked. The experience prompted her to reflect on the importance of understanding the law and taking jury service seriously.
'I started realising... people don't know much about the law,' Witherspoon said, describing some of the deliberations as troubling.
Despite her initial disbelief at being selected as foreperson, Witherspoon said she took the responsibility seriously and helped guide the jury through its deliberations.
The Lasting Influence of Elle Woods
Witherspoon's jury experience remains a curious collision between Hollywood and real life. Her Legally Blonde character, Elle Woods, became synonymous with legal ambition and expertise — so much so that the image reportedly followed the actress into a real Beverly Hills jury room.
Her experience also highlights the power of celebrity and popular culture to shape public perception. While Witherspoon never attended Harvard Law School, her fictional counterpart apparently made enough of an impression to convince fellow jurors that she was qualified to lead them.
In a fitting twist, Elle Woods may have been fictional, but her influence on Witherspoon's real-life jury duty was anything but.
