Beloved television host Rosie O'Donnell has shared a emotional look into the final years of her late co-star, Michelle Trachtenberg. In a candid new interview, the 64-year-old comedian opened up about how she tried to support the former child star before her untimely passing.

She admitted that there was a heartbreaking disconnect in Michelle's final years. While there were many attempts to stage a warm reunion, Trachtenberg's worsening health struggles meant she could not make it.

O'Donnell focused on the painful reality that she had invited Trachtenberg on different occasions to catch up in person. These invites were to be met with painful cancellations.

The two actresses had formed a tight bond decades earlier while filming the 1996 family classic Harriet the Spy. As Trachtenberg grew isolated in her adult life, bringing them back together proved to be an impossible task.

The comedian grew to love her co-star and marvelled at her talent.

A Reunion That Never Happened

According to O'Donnell, she arranged for the pair to meet up on three or four separate occasions. 'She just never showed up', the TV star revealed sadly during the interview. O'Donnell went to great lengths to welcome her former castmate, setting up plans at restaurants as well as inside her own home. 'Sometimes at restaurants, other times at my house where we'd had someone prepare the whole meal', she remembered.

The routine became devastating for O'Donnell, who would call to check on her young friend when the hours ticked by. 'I would call her and go, "Honey, are you heading over?" and she'd go, "Was that today?"', O'Donnell shared. She described the heartbreaking confusion that defined their final interactions. 'She was not in good shape', O'Donnell even compared the situation to Whitney Houston, who failed to show up for a scheduled hour on her talk show.

Remembering Michelle

Trachtenberg was famous for her standout roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gossip Girl. She passed away unexpectedly in February 2025 at the young age of 39. The New York City Medical Examiner later ruled that her death was caused by natural complications from diabetes mellitus. However, O'Donnell's raw comments suggest a much darker, unaddressed battle with substance abuse behind the scenes.

O'Donnell confessed that she believed the bright young talent had fallen into severe issues with drugs and alcohol. All these happened before they lost touch. She also recounted calling Trachtenberg's mother, Lana, to discover how long the young actress seemed to be out of it.

Seeing the Warning Signs

Despite seeing the warning signs, O'Donnell admitted she never truly believed the situation would end in Michelle dying. She explained that families dealing with these issues always assume their loved ones will survive. This makes the sudden loss feel even more shattering.

O' Donnell looked back on their time together on Harriet the Spy. The then nine-year-old Trachtenberg played the titular young detective alongside O'Donnell's wise character, Ole Golly. The comedian praised her immense natural talent. She described her as a genuine child genius who could memorise scripts instantly and improvise effortlessly on set.

The comedian remains haunted by the missed connections and the dinner dates that never came to be. 'I wish I could have done more', she stated with heavy regret, noting that the actress had become completely inaccessible towards the very end. The host also shared that the situation hit close to home, as her own family faces similar addiction battles. By sharing her private grief, O'Donnell hopes to urge families to take this reality seriously.
