Ryan Lochte's marriage to Kayla Reid collapsed after she says years of alleged cheating, drug use and deception left her questioning what was real, with the former Olympic swimming champion admitting he was not the husband or father his family deserved.
Reid, 35, has spoken publicly about the breakdown of their eight-year marriage after their divorce was finalised, describing a relationship she says was repeatedly damaged by Lochte's infidelity and substance use.
'I don't think it was a love anyone deserved,' Reid said, summing up the painful end of a relationship that began with the couple marrying in 2018 and produced three children.
The revelations paint a picture of a marriage that deteriorated gradually rather than collapsing overnight, with Reid saying repeated incidents eventually destroyed her trust.
Cheating, Cocaine and a Marriage Built on Distrust
According to Reid, the problems began with infidelity during her first pregnancy. She says Lochte attended a wedding without her and was later photographed appearing close to another woman.
Years later, Reid says another discovery reignited her fears. In 2023, while she was pregnant with their daughter Georgia, she found a scantily clad selfie from another woman on Lochte's phone.
For Reid, the incidents were not isolated mistakes. She says they became part of a pattern that left her questioning both her husband and herself.
'What was real? What wasn't?' she recalled.
The situation became even more serious in 2024, when Reid says she discovered evidence that Lochte had been using cocaine in their daughter Liv's bedroom. She also alleges that she saw him using nitrous oxide in the garage while one of their children was present.
Lochte has acknowledged drug use in his past but has denied using substances around his children.
The allegations surrounding substance use were particularly significant because Reid says she had become increasingly concerned about the effect Lochte's behaviour could have on their family.
By January 2025, she says she had reached a breaking point.
During a meeting involving Lochte and their therapist, Reid demanded that he undergo 30 days of inpatient treatment followed by a marriage programme.
According to Reid, Lochte rejected the suggestion that he had a problem.
She then called an attorney and filed for divorce.

The split did not happen quickly. Divorce proceedings continued for nearly 18 months and involved disputes over custody and competing legal motions.
Reid ultimately retained primary custody of their three children, while Lochte moved to Missouri to coach college swimming.
Amid the accusations, Lochte has largely declined to publicly trade allegations with his former wife. Instead, the 12-time Olympic medallist acknowledged that he had failed his family.
'Looking back, I wasn't ready to be a husband or the man my family deserved at that point in my life,' he said.
'That's on me.'
Lochte also described his children as 'the greatest gift' to come from that period of his life, while making clear that he would not respond to every allegation or characterisation surrounding the divorce.
The Olympian is now engaged to Molly Gillihan. She has disputed Reid's account of their relationship, saying she and Lochte were acquaintances and that their romantic relationship began only after he was living independently and the divorce proceedings had started.
For Reid, the end of the marriage has nevertheless brought the chance to rebuild. She is now concentrating on her real estate career and podcast, while looking ahead rather than revisiting the relationship.
'I get to have a second chance at life and love,' she said.
After years of alleged betrayal and uncertainty, that new chapter may be the most important outcome of all.
