Serena Williams
Mattel honours tennis icon Serena Williams with a brand-new Barbie Signature collectable Barbie Instagram

Serena Williams has been honoured with a new Barbie Signature doll inspired by her memorable 2005 Australian Open victory. Mattel released the collectable in October 2026, recreating the green-and-white outfit she wore during her championship run and celebrating her achievements on the court and her influence beyond sport.

The doll features a green-and-white cut-out top with mesh detailing, a white tennis skirt and matching footwear. Accessories include a sweatband, socks, a tennis racket and a ball. Mattel also paid attention to Williams' hairstyle, designing the doll to reflect the curly hair she wore during the tournament.

Barbie Dream Team

The release follows Williams' inclusion in Barbie's Dream Team earlier in 2026, when the brand recognised women from different industries for their professional achievements and influence. The new Signature doll gives the tennis star a separate collectable that connects her sporting legacy with Barbie's wider role-model initiative.

According to Mattel's product listing, the doll costs $45 (£34) and is designed for collectors and fans aged six and above. It includes a display stand and certificate of authenticity. The company describes the figure as a tribute to Williams' career and her ability to inspire future generations.

Williams won the Australian Open women's singles title in 2005, defeating fellow American Lindsay Davenport in the final. The victory marked her seventh Grand Slam singles title and her second Australian Open championship. She later went on to win 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most by any player in the Open Era.

Her 2005 tournament run also included a dramatic semi-final against Maria Sharapova. Williams saved match points before securing victory, adding to the significance of the championship that the new doll commemorates.

Victory Outfit

The outfit is central to the release. Rather than presenting Williams in a generic tennis uniform, Mattel has recreated a recognisable look from a specific moment in her career. The design includes the cut-out detailing and mesh elements of the original ensemble, while the accompanying racket and ball reinforce the doll's sporting theme.

Williams has welcomed the recreation of her championship look. In comments reported by the Women's Tennis Association, she said Mattel had captured the outfit accurately and highlighted the importance of getting her hairstyle right. She wanted the doll to feature big, curly hair with some colour, reflecting the look she remembered from that period.

The project also carries a message about representation. Williams has spoken about growing up without seeing many girls who looked like her represented in ways that encouraged them to imagine limitless possibilities. Her latest Barbie gives younger fans a figure based on a Black woman whose achievements helped reshape expectations in professional tennis.

Message on Representation

In a statement published by the WTA, Williams said she hoped girls who played with the doll would see possibilities in themselves as well as in her. She described the opportunity to dream big, work hard, change direction and break barriers as part of what made the recognition meaningful.

Mattel has positioned the release within its broader efforts to introduce children to women whose accomplishments extend across sport, business and other fields. The company's Barbie Role Models initiative aims to make these achievements more visible to younger audiences.

Williams' influence has continued beyond professional tennis. She has developed business interests and invested in ventures across different industries, while remaining a prominent figure in discussions about equality and opportunities for women in sport.

The doll also arrives amid continued interest in collectables that commemorate major sporting achievements. By drawing on a specific championship outfit, Mattel has connected the product to a moment that tennis fans can identify with, rather than relying solely on Williams' celebrity status.

The release places the focus on both the athlete and the significance of her career. For younger fans, it offers a representation of a sporting champion; for collectors, it preserves a recognisable look associated with one of Williams' major tournament victories.
