Shania Twain faced a unique choice that few musicians are ever given: she could either perform on stage at Wembley Stadium in front of ninety thousand people as a special guest for Harry Styles, or she could fly to Manhattan to attend the wedding of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, the most highly anticipated celebrity wedding of the year.

When asked about it on eTalk, Twain clapped her hands and laughed, admitting it was just funny that it worked out that way, especially once the interviewer pointed out that Styles happens to be one of Swift's exes.

Ultimately, she chose Wembley. Considering the significance of her decision and the tremendous opportunity she was passing up, Twain seems at peace with her decision.

The Wembley Bond

Twain and Styles have a history dating back to Coachella 2022, when the One Direction alum invited her on stage for a surprise duet and told the crowd that she had taught him to sing. Twain admitted she was starstruck to share the stage with someone she genuinely admired, and since then, they have remained close friends, consistently exchanging public praise.

This year, their mutual admiration blossomed into something even bigger when Styles invited Twain to open all six of his sold-out shows at Wembley as part of his Together, Together tour. He described this opportunity as a full-circle moment, reflecting on how much her music had influenced him while growing up.

For Twain, this experience fulfilled a bucket list dream she had pursued for over three decades. She told fans that she could hardly believe she was finally performing at Wembley at the age of sixty and that sharing this milestone with someone she loves and admires made it even more special.

In light of all that, missing a wedding suddenly looks like a far smaller sacrifice, and Twain herself was quick to insist she would have done anything to be there had her schedule allowed it.

Why the Swift Connection Stings

The wedding that Twain skipped was not just any wedding. Swift and Styles had a brief relationship in 2012 and 2013, which is widely believed to have inspired her song 'Out of the Woods'.

Even more than a decade later, their history remains a topic of discussion. Styles himself was unable to attend Swift's big day either, tied up with the same residency that kept Twain away.

However, his partner, Zoë Kravitz, was on the guest list, having long been part of Swift's inner circle. This created a complicated situation: Swift's ex could not be there, his partner attended in his place, and the woman performing alongside him that same weekend was someone few would have expected to be caught in the middle of it.

A Professional Commitment, Not a Snub

Attending six nights at Wembley is no small commitment. Tickets were sold well in advance, the production was finalised months prior, and thousands of fans arranged their entire summer around those dates.

Shania Twain skipping Taylor Swift's wedding seems less like a snub and more like an artist honouring a major commitment. Very few people can say no to Taylor Swift and have it make sense, but Twain's decades-long career and her status as a peer rather than just a guest give her the rare ability to make that choice.

If there is a lesson in any of this, it is that Twain and Styles built something at Wembley worth protecting, and neither of them seems to have any regrets about where they chose to be that weekend.
