Tom Holland's candid confession about his battle with alcohol has resurfaced online, with fans praising the Spider-Man star for revealing the moment he realised drinking had started to take control of his life.
The British actor's honest admission has gained fresh attention after clips from his appearance on Jay Shetty's On Purpose podcast were revisited, where he opened up about the personal struggle that led him to quit alcohol.
The revelation gives fans a rare glimpse behind Holland's global success, as the Marvel star admitted he was privately facing challenges despite his Hollywood achievements and public image.
Holland explained that his journey began after a particularly heavy Christmas period when he decided to try Dry January. What started as a short break from drinking soon became a life-changing decision that transformed his health and mindset.
Fans reacted with support after the confession resurfaced, with one writing: 'You owe us nothing, Tom Holland. Thank you for sharing all the same.'
Another added: 'It's a hard thing to do, Tom, and you will be a better person for it.'
The Moment Tom Holland Knew Alcohol Had Become a Problem
Speaking on Jay Shetty's podcast, Holland revealed that he never intended to quit alcohol permanently at first. After what he described as a 'very, very boozy December', he decided to stop drinking for January and see how he felt.
However, the challenge quickly became harder than expected. 'I just wanted to do Dry January,' Holland said. 'And all I could think about was having a drink. It's all I could think about.'
The actor admitted he found himself waking up thinking about alcohol and checking the clock to see when he could drink again. That moment made him question whether his relationship with drinking had become unhealthy.
'I just was like, wow, maybe I have a little bit of an alcohol thing,' he admitted. Holland then extended his challenge into February, hoping two months without alcohol would prove he did not have a problem.
Instead, he continued to struggle. 'I felt like I couldn't be social. I felt like I couldn't go to the pub and have a lime soda. I couldn't go out for dinner,' he explained.
Holland then challenged himself to stay alcohol-free until his birthday on June 1. By that point, he said he experienced a major improvement in his wellbeing.
'I was the happiest I've ever been in my life,' he revealed, adding that he slept better, handled problems more effectively, and experienced greater mental clarity.
Marvel Star Says Sobriety Helped Him Take Back Control
For Holland, quitting alcohol was not simply about stopping drinking—it was about understanding why he felt he needed it. The actor admitted he often relied on alcohol to feel comfortable at social events and work gatherings.
'I would go to events for work and be like, I can't enjoy myself until I've had a few beers,' he said. Holland eventually questioned why he depended on alcohol to relax.
'Why am I enslaved to this drink? Why am I so obsessed by the idea of having this drink?' he asked. Now, around a year and a half into his sobriety journey, Holland said alcohol no longer controls his thoughts.
The actor credited his friends, brother, and family for supporting his decision, revealing that nobody pressured him to return to drinking. His mother has also stopped drinking, making the change something they could experience together.
Holland stressed that his journey was personal and that he was not telling others to follow the same path. 'I don't want to be that person that's saying to people, you should get sober,' he said. 'I went on my own little journey.'
His honesty has also been connected with his previous discussions about mental health, including stepping away from social media while filming The Crowded Room after feeling overwhelmed by public reactions.
